Hey everyone, i just moved to the US from the UK. I just bought a 97 dodge dakota with a 5.2 V8. Now us guys in the UK are big into drifting messing around with skylines and the like and when i went for a session in the dakota i has horrified to find that it did a one wheel fury on me!!!!. From what i can figure out it has a 8.25" diff. Can anyone tell me where i can get a slippery diff or a locker if possible and if it is definitly a 8.25" dif in this model? Many thanks. Dean.

you should have gotten an R/T it's motor is bigger and it's torque is massive, oh yeah it comes with a 9.25 limited slip diff. with 3.92 gears.

Yea i looked at an R/T but my pocket just wasn't that deep, i'm a poor student!!!!lol. However, at some stage down the line i will drop in the SRT 10 donkey and see how that compares with the 5.9.Need to get some money first though. Can anyone tell me if i will have to change the rear end to get a slippery diff or is there a company out there that makes LSD's for the 8.25" diff?

My '98 Dak has a limited-slip differential, which was an option, so Dodge does have them. I don't have a vendor for you, but one shouldn't be difficult to find.

2.71's on the V6? Are you doing this for gas mileage? Those 2.71's are real tall gears and might be OK for a torquie motor, but not a V6. I'd think you would want to go with a lower gear, bigger number numerically, to get more power to the ground.

I don't know if the 73 gears will fit in the 92 diff, just know that you will be losing power with the 2.71s, engine won't be any less powerful, but it will feel that way driving around.

Most people use with a lower gear set (numerically higher) for more power,,, or a higher gear set (numerically lower) if they want good gas mileage or are doing high speed road racing. I aquired a set of 2.8x gears to run the Silver State Classic or Pony Express, but never had the $$$ to get the truck road worthy for the race. Don't want to get the shiny side down at 150 ;-)

i was thinking about biulding a nice little 340 and stuffing that in there with the 2.71s and a sure-grip, i think that would be a cool way to go

I've heard there are some differences between the older 8 1/4 rears and the newer ones. May not be compatible.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

A 2.71 rear gear may not give you more top speed. You are for getting about drag. A Dakota generates siginficant drag. Now your V6 has to fight the wind AND a steep gear. Somewhere between 3.00 and 3.55 are the best all around gears for the V6
