A ring and pinoin change shouldn't cost more than 200 in labour. So if you have the gears, install kit, and oil you just need someone with the skills and tools to install it all.

A dial indicator will cost you about 100 bucks. Rear ends are also something that takes a try or two if it's your first time. It's worth the 200 IMO.

Even the most mechanical people I know of that change out engines and rip them apart get the gears done at a shop. It's one of those things there is no shame in getting it done at a shop.

And again, it shouldn't be more than 200 labour. If you bring them the rear end it'll be even cheaper, but will take some labour on your part.

I have a 2000 Durango and a 2002 Dakota. They both have 8.25 rear axles and they are both AWD.
They both have 4.7 litres of PURE MOPAR POWER! They both have the Tow-package etc. Dodge figures, that the Torque is being split, so no need for the 9.25.

I had the job done on my dakota about a month ago and it was about $500. My brother-in-law thought that was a really good deal. Now I'm hearing a concerning noise in the engine!!

Here in LA I have called a dozen wreckers. Few 97-2000 dakota/durango rear ends. 9 1/4 durango unit 1100 used! One wreckin 4x4 shop said they don't bother with them used. The 8 1/4 bearings go especially if pinion has been incorrectly installed between 80-110K. My truck 110,000K.
Powertrain specialist in Garden Grove Ca specializes in rear ends and if I can't find a posi 8 1/4 or 9 1/4 I will rebuild and upgrade with a auburn unit. I would like to go from 3.21 to 3.55's to pull my nautique.

I have also a 00 awd and a 8 1/4. I did find out from Dodge that the previous post was correct. The awd will Dissipate the heat and forces on both diffs and does not req 9 1/4 diffs.
