Subject: Anyone ever do this to their airbox?

I was wondering if you would get more inlet airflow if you opened up the inlet to the stock filter airbox? It looks like the inlet tube is only about 2". Would it improve the flow if I were to hack a hole in the bottom of the box (obviously before the panel filter?
Thanks.

I don't think it would make a noticable change in performance, just a little more intake noise.

Do you still have the inlet elbow on the airbox? Take that off and it will take in more air from directly in front of it. Don't cut a hole in the bottom! The exhaust manifold is under there and you will just end up sucking in more hot air

Good point about the intake of hot air... I would think you'd want to make the opening where the tube goes into the box at least as large as the tube that goes to the air hat... I guess I will need to do some measuring before I do too much.

Why would you want to remove the "snorkle" part of the air intake..?
It is positioned so it will draw cold air from factory opening in the fender well. If you open the hood and look inside the fender well behind the headlight the opening is channeled to the "snorkle".

Thanks bruce p for directing people to my swiss cheesy site.I have since re installed the snorkel for the reasons handi2 has mentioned, but the loudness goes way down with that thing on, I prefer the sound without it.esp about 2000 rpm , jj

handi2,

one of the mopar mags did some drag racing testing on a stock dakota rt awhile back. they removed that elbow and picked up a couple of tenths off of the quarter mile... they also did things like remove spare tire, let down tailgate, and had a lighter driver race. it was to see if they could get a completely stock Rt to run under 15 seconds and they did.

OK, I guess I'll think of something else... I just don't want to spend the money on a K&N FIPK and I'm not a fan of the 'PVC Pipe' setup (no offense to those of you who use them).
The reason I was thinking about this is bacause the K&N panel filter I have only gets dirty right next to where the snorkle inlet is - it looks like the snorkle is a restriction.
What about the stock air hat - is there anything that can (should) be done to it to increase flow?
Thanks again.

ps: handi2, nice Mustang - I've got a '69 Fastback and a modified '91 GT Vert triple white...

I have modified the intake in my Dakota.
I am using the stock airbox, and have removed the "snorkel".
I instead ran a Aluminum duct up to the Grille.
The only problems that I have found with this is a few leaves in the airbox in the fall.

I removed my Snorkel, (ie intake muffler) Yes its a bit louder, Did it increase hp, Not really, Did it improve my throttle response, yes but not a lot. I think the idea of running a cold air intake up from the grill and removing that plastic cover to make room for it sounds good. Good to hear people are trying different things, that are Cheap! If it works great, if not, so what,, it did not cost ya much if anything at all. Try it if it works fine, if not put it back if you want to.
thats what I say.

I talked to the people at Ken Bell and they said that they dyno'd a 4.7 with stock airbox and with no airbox at all, just open throtle body and according to there numbers there was no difference. Just louder. and that an open air filter actually draws warmer air than the stock airbox, most of the people making claims to more horsepower are dyno'ing them with the hoods open!
once you close the hood it is hotter.

I think that Ken Bell might be skewing the results slightly. It may be true that the stock airbox and the straight open TB will make the same peak hp numbers, but there's more to the story than that. The open TB will produce less torque in the lower rpm ranges than the stock airbox will. The peak hp numbers are about the same. A tuned intake tube and free flowing air cleaner will make about 5 more hp and torque than the stock airbox and it will make noticably more torque off the bottom than the open TB does. All these dyno pulls are also in static air conditions. A cold air kit that puts the air intake point into the path of cooler air will no doubt improve performance under actual driving conditions.

I cut the front of the air box, and all the baffles. I did this at the same time I ported and polished the TB. It definatly helped performance and sounds AWESOME!

Hey OZ, I did the same as BB2DAK. But in the winter I put the snorkel back on to keep the sand and salt intake to a minimum. There is a minimal noise difference too. Just get a 4" aluminum duct, cut it it a few inches short, install it then expand it to your grill with the flap pulled aside.

Got tired of waiting for K & N's 4.7 set-up. I
went with a shaker hood. What a difference!!!
It's awsome.
