Subject: fuel mileage- tailgate up, down, or off? IP: Logged
Message: I'm sure you guys have tackled this question before- but humour me: if I want the best highway mileage, what position should the tailgate be in? Is there one "right" answer? I need a wind tunnel....thanks all!

Message: The answer is pretty weel spelled out in the link. But a big problem that will result in leaving the tailgate down is the bed sides will in time acually start to break and fail. And like the link said the best is to put a tonneu cover on. I dont really know if one is better then the other when it comes to covers but i personally like the look of solid fiberglass covers.

Message: I recommend going with a tonneau cover. After I put on my custom-made flush-mounted cover I picked up 1 MPG, I don't need to worry about anything light blowing out of the bed, and everything in it is out of sight. Plus it looks great.
Personnaly, I hate the look of those "hanging-over-the-rails" fiberglass covers seen on all the trucks on the road. That's why I went the custom route to get what I wanted. I have since found a company named Urban Industries that makes flush-mount fiberglass tonneaus. Don't know their prices, but check them out at this site. The photos look sweet.

Message: I agree with Modain, I saw 2 MPG increase and finally broke 20 MPG with consistent 75-80 Mph on the interstate. Before my Checkmate Checkerpro (which cost me only $450 + shipping) I got 17.5 MPG. Plus I can now keep my battery box and fuel cell hidden from prying tree hugger eyes!
