Subject: New Owner with Steering Wheel Questions IP: Logged
Message: My steering wheel doesn't lock when I take the key out of the ignition. In the manual, under the section on the steering wheel lock, it says "if equipped." How can I tell if my truck is supposed to be equipped with a steering wheel lock? It's a loaded 04 Sport Plus with just about every option.
Also, after I'm driving about 20 minutes or so, the steering wheel will start to make a rubbing sound when I turn it very slowly. The sound is coming right from inside the wheel itself. This started at about 1600 miles, and doesn't happen too often but when it does it's pretty annoying. I'm going to have the dealer check out both things at my first service, but I was hoping someone could offer some advice or suggestions first.

Message: Dude check the rubbing sound NOW! I can think of two things right off that the sound could be. One would be the famous issue of a ball-joint failing (although unless it has completly failed, it normally pops) and the other could be a damaged brake or rotor. I heard that the Gen3 Dakotas have problems with rotors warping, but I can't confirm it since I own two Gen2 Daks. But you shouldn't take that lightly. Oh, and I also just thought of another cause. Check your power-steering fluid. If it's low, that may be it.

Message: Actually, Sephiroth, Dude was right--by "inside the wheel itself," I meant inside the steering wheel itself. Though, I thank you for your answer. To be even more specific, it sounds like it could be a rubber seal rubbing up against the plastic part of the steering wheel when I turn it.

Message: Ah OK, that's different. Wheel to me means the things that make your vehicle roll, not a steering-wheel. In that case, it sounds like maybe you do have the locking thing, but maybe it is loose somehow (hence it not working). I don't think the Gen3 columns are much different from the Gen2 columns, so if you wanted to pop the column behind the wheel/air-bag off, you only need a 7/64 allan-wrench. Two screws in the plastic cover, one in the middle that goes into the actual metal column. then you can open it up and look for yourself.

Message: I get the same rubbing sound in my 98 dak cc. It seems like it is the rubber grommett where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. Try silicone spray, I did and no more rubbing.

Message: Duh, go screw yourself. I stop by once before work (or play depending on the situation) and then sometimes once before bed. And I'm not eating jack. Go to the dealer and tell them you have a rubbing sound in your "wheel". I bet you five-thousand dollars he/she checks the rims, brakes, and such. There is a HUGE difference between "wheel" and "steering-wheel". In fact the difference is exactly nine characters (letters) and that equals nine more bytes of data on any OS.
I won't even go into the "you don't know everything" comment because it shows that you, like so many other immature children, only read a few select posts, then flame. If you DID read more of these posts, you'd find that I too ask for help or advice here. Now get your head out of your rear and act civil.

Who are you calling "immature" with your "a$$hole" and "You kiddies who skim a post and then start flaming are just too damn stupid." and "Duh, go screw yourself". Try taking a look in the mirror sometime.

Message: Yes I ahve the steering wheel squeek. When you turn the wheel it squeeks and has a slight vibration. The truck has 1200 miles on it. It is in the steering column. I am reluctant to take it in because the dealer won't fix it anyway. Wester Dodge in California is a dispicable dealership. They re fckin liars and lazy lip service fools.

Message: Why not take it to a dealer in the next town/city when you have a day off? Maybe a bit extreme, but if it's good service it's worth it.

Message: Late post I know, but I had the same problem. Zangara Dodge in ABQ fixed it no problems/questions asked. The fix was a whole new steering column. Was just wondering if anybody else was having this problem. May indicate a "trend" with Dodge Dakotas. Also I have an 04 QC. The mechanic at Zangara had to call "the main office" of Dodge to get some help and they told him to lube this one part, and if it didn't stop then to order a whole new column.

Message: Just an update: I had the steering column replaced two separate times and each time, the squeaking/rubbing was still there. The problem is definitely the rubber grommet where the steering column passes through the fire wall. When the engine heats up, the grommet expands and rubs against the steering column. Lubing it didn't help--it just made the squeak louder. At this point I've given up. With the latest column, it's not as bad as it was before, and it only squeaks when it's above 80 degrees out, so I'm just learning to live with it. I'm tired of going back for service. Probably going to trade the truck in within the year anyway.

Message: beaveo, take it in. Mine would "squeak/rubbing noise" even when it was cool out, unlike Nick's when his got above 80. They said something about my "clock spring" I have no idea what that is, but it seemed to be part of the problem. Good luck with getting it fixed. Damn annoying noises...

Message: If it is an 04 take it in and demand the squeek go away if they do not fix it after three attempts pull the lemon law issue on them. What ever it is, it has to be under warranty, right?
My 2 cents.
