Message: About when the temp hits 55-60, or above ,my idle drops to 500 rpm while in drive. Dealer says DC is aware of problem and they are working on a flash for this. In the meantime there is nothing they can do. I have it documented that they "duplicated problem but flash not available yet". It idled great all winter at 600-650 rpm BTW.

Message: This was at a Chrysler-Jeep dealership BTW. I had a bad experience with the local Dodge dealership so I figured I`d try a local Chrysler place. They didn`t fix it but at least they were honest and admitted the problem. One of the service guys owns a 03 Dakota and he has the same problem. They tried everything to fix his idle including,"things your not suppose to do". They tried adjusting the idle screw but the PCM would override it after a while.
Just adding here before I suggest this thread to don on another idle thread.
PS: I did pull the IAC and it was very clean.

Message: That's funny, I had to adjust the idle screw on my '00 when swapping to a 68mm TB from a manual transmission truck years ago and the PCM has never overridden it.

Message: Kowalski, I think turning the idle screw would work if it idled low all the time. Mine idles great(6-650)until it gets warm out, above 55 roughly. When the computer leans it out is when it happens I guess. If the adjustment held you would think it would idle that much higher when it got cold again, which I wouldn`t want. An IAT adjuster may solve this but I would rather get a factory fix instead. Hopefully a flash will be available soon.

Message: Temp.fix for idle problem with 4.7L
jeremiah2360:
I disconnected the AC clutch wires and put in a "on-off" switch between the power source and the AC compressor clutch. Now I can leave the dash AC control in the "on" position and the engine idle stays at 600rpm all the time. When I want AC, I just flip the switch to "on" and everything goes back to normal opreation. The computer thinks that the AC is running, and kicks the idle up to 600rpm, even when the compressor is not running. You can try this by just pulling the power connector to the AC compressor apart, turn on the AC and take her out and see what happens...Don

Message: Hmmm, good thinking Don,but my idle still goes to 750 when I use the AC. Thats a little too high plus I don`t want to go through the trouble of rigging a switch. Great idea though!

Message: Jeremiah:
Could you let me know when your DC dealer comes up with a "flash" to correct the idle drop off problem? My dealer here in Mich, just gets a blank stare when I mention "flash" and has a stock answer "Chrysler says that's normal". Thanks for the reply...Don

Message: If your truck idles ok some times, you may well have a problem with the TPS sensor if its not the IAC. You're right about what the idle screw will work for jeremiah, and probably understand it better than the "service guy" who "tried everything". There is no way the computer could over ride that since it is a mechanical setting for the most shut down position the throttle plate could be in. Impossible for the PCM to close it down any more than that.

Message: If it happened at random I would change the TPS, but it is temperature specific. For 35 bucks(I think)it might be worth a shot though.
I`m a chicken when it comes to that idle screw. Maybe if I put a new TPS in and it doesn`t work I`d try it. I know it worked for you but more than one person has said that turning that thing will start the Apocalypse.
For now I`ll just hope for a flash soon, but thanks for the advice Kowalski.
