Subject: 318 low idle

Message:
Hey guys I own a 96 Dodge Dakota club cab with a 318 and 5 speed tranny. My RPM's at idle are only around 100. Sometimes a little more but not much. This really makes the engine miss at this low RPM. When I hold it steady around 800 the engine smoothes out fine. I replaced the IAC and am still having the problem. Nothing comes up on computer as being wrong. Other than this the engine runs great. Thank you for any help.

400rpm on the 318 is normal. Mine idles at 400rpm and unless you are in near-silence, you have to watch the tach to make sure the dang thing didn't die. At least, that's how smooth and quietly mine idles. If it is rough at 400rpm, something's wrong.

Mine runs alot better when I hold it at 400 also. It just seems like every year the idling keeps getting lower. Now its down around 100. When it gets that low its so close to shutting off that it makes for a poor idle. The technicians have told me they cant find anything wrong. What is yours idling at now Carmen? Thanks for the input.

My 96 does the same thing. Sometimes its normal, around 600-700, then its 400, or as low as 200.

What's up with that? I replaced the IAC, cleaned the TB, and reset the PCM.

Any ideas?

Why worry until it drops below 400? In reality, 400 is normal after the engine is at operating temp. Mine may start out at 600-800 on a cold winter day, but after it warms up it goes back down to 400 and sits there. Granted, mine has never idled below 400, but since I bought it, it has ALWAYS idled at 400, and that's just that. In fact, if I saw my engine idling at 600-800 after the engine was warm, I'd be worried because it's actually idling too fast.

The idle though at that low will make the engine shake. Every now and then if I depress the clutch quickly it will stall because the RPM's will dive quickly and because it idles so low it will not be able to catch itself and shut off. This doesnt happen often but the idling problem is always there. It runs fine other than that but I would like to fix this annoying problem.

Hmm... so when yours idles at 400rpm it's rough? That's odd. When mine idles at 400rpm you can't even feel it. If I was deaf I wouldn't know it was running at all! I don't know what to tell you there. Have you checked to see that your air-flow up to the TB is good? How about fuel? Oh, and have you tried any fuel-injector cleaner or higher-grade fuel?? I won't use anything except the Redline fuel-injector cleaner since it has no detergents in it and won't wear the engine. They claim you can use it every tank since it's so mild, but I use it once a month.

Anyways, I'd check my oil (is it thinning, or low), air-flow (you can remove the piece above the TB and run it for a few min as long as you're not in Dustville USA), and fuel-flow/fuel quality. If it's something more than that, one of the other guys will have to help you. Oh, and if you want to reset the computer, you could always disconnect the battery ground for a minute or two.
