Subject: header and cat question IP: Logged
Message: I got a 2002 Dakota QuadCab with a 5.9, 52mm fastman t/b, gibson catback (duel rear exit), and an intense performance intake. I'm looking to finish the exhaust up with a set of headers. Is JBA, Gibson, shorties better or is tri Y mopars better for low end and midrange torque? Can anyone give me there opinion on any of these?
Also, what size cat did the 2000 R/T's come with? Will I lose low and midrange torque if I install a 3 inch cat?

Message: I have a '01 R/T w/ the JBA's and despite what others have said about feeling any difference, I definately felt the difference from the stock. It really compliments that 52mm and if U get an M-1 it really helps. Anyways the JBA's didn't even need retightening after cool downs...still as tight as when they were first put on. I recommend JBA, but don't know how they compare to others.

Message: Oh and for the 3rd cat I just cut mine out, thats gotta be good for an extra 10-15hp (hoping it don't cause backpressure problems). You should get a highflow cat those have big gains and still keepin it legal. Don't know the size though.

"Under Federal EPA regulation, replacement of original catalytic converters is allowed only if the original converter(s) is missing, or the vehicle has more than 50,000 miles or is at least five years old and the need for a replacement has been established and documented, or a local inspection program has determined the existing converter is in need of replacement."
I found this out while contemplating a complete header-back exhaust upgrade. At this point, I think I'll leave the stock cat for now, but sometime in the future I think that I will use it as a "lifting point" for my jack. The "official" story to the exhaust shop will be an ill-fated meeting with a rock while off-roading. 8^)

Message: ANyone, esp duner experience a backfire like sound with a high flow cat when you mash the pedal then quickly release the gas?? Or even CW with your cut cat??

Message: Yeah I was just about to post that question...I don't think its a cat cuz I cut my cat like CW. First time I noticed it was when I first swapped out my M-1 and we had just replaced it. It was pretty cold outside and I mashed it and POW this loud pop came from the engine...my buddy said it was just running cold. About a couple months later (last night) I was driving along and decelerated and then mashed it and POW did it again. Dunno what it is.

Message: Halo3 - If you are finding the muffler shops afraid to make this change you could try a welding shop that does exhaust work too. A lot of these guys have the proper "renegade" mentality and can be very acomodating. Just make sure they can mandrel bend the pipes for less restriction.
