Subject: Clunk shifting into Reverse IP: Logged
Message: I own a 1999 Dakota Sport 4x4 with the 5.2L V8. It has roughly 86,000 miles on it. Every time i shift into reverse it shifts HARD with an accompanying clunk. Can anyone help me out with this?

Message: My 98 RC v6 does the same thing. It kind of worries me, it only seems to do it when it’s warmed up though. Sometimes its louder and metallic sounding, other times its just harsh engagement. I have found that if i shift into neutral then into reverse its not as bad though. i don't remember where i saw a TSB about it, it was something about a check ball being replaced with a plastic one....

Message: The sound you all are describing sounds like excessive rear end play. My 98 dak does the same thing. It could also be worn universal joint. Just crawl under the truck grab hold of the drivshaft and turn it back it forth. More than likley there will be alot of play in there. If there is than its your rear end making the clunk. Mine has done it since 35,000 miles still no rear end noise, so im not too concerned about it.

Message: My truck has had that same cluncking noise since I purchased it new. If it ever stops making the noise then I'll get worried. But yeah, when my girlfriend drives the truck she gets freaked out by that noise. She thinks it's falling apart...lol I'm up to 109877 miles....now if I could just get rid of that ping!!! I'll live with the transmission cluncking because I hate paying for super unleaded gas.

Message: if you own a dodge truck with a auto then you,ll
have a clunk 99% of them do.
