Subject: driveshaft damage? IP: Logged
Message: I was crawling around under my '00 R/T last night, ya know, just got it and was lookin around underneath. (I'm not the only one that does these things at 0330 in the morning right??) Anyway, noticed the driveshaft was scratched up alot. Upon further inspection it appears that the shaft is coming into contact with the muffler!!! Anyone ever seen/heard of this? Any ideas? Just sitting in the driveway there's about 1-2 inches clearance between the 2. Is it possible that under hard acceleration the rear end squats down and brings the 2 pieces into contact? I've never seen this before myself but thats the only possibility I can come up with.

Message: This is a pretty common occurance with aftermarket exhausts. The installer should be smart enough not to do this, but not always. You'll need to try and move the muffler around enough to get it out of the way. Or you might have to swap to a smaller muffler.

Message: I used to be able to hear it clanging when I would turn fast. The g-force would push it enough to come into contact with the driveshaft joint right in front of the rear diff. Bend the rear-most muffler hanger to the side, it should raise the height of the muffler. That made my muffler sometimes hit against my leaf spring(I have the hotchkis suspension kit). So now my muffler is secured directly against my leaf spring with steel stranded cable and clamp. My muffler was an aluminum Gibson single-in dual out before, the contact with the driveshaft put a hole in it. I replaced it with a stainless gibson single-in single-out, the same time I bend the hanger up more. Bending the hanger is the key to positioning the muffler. Oh yeah, I have a 2001 4.7l CC auto 2wd with 47,700mi.

Message: You can simply move that muffler over a couple inches. Take it to your muffler shop and ask them, they might weld a brace on the pipe near the muffler to stabilize it and keep it in position. Ask em'
