Subject: Wheel Bearing Check? IP: Logged
Message: OK, are there wheel-bearings on the front on 4x4 vehicles? Possibly a stupid question, but after a long drive (I am visiting relatives until Wednsday) I noticed a VERY quiet noise when moving forward slowly (10-15mph) and it sounds like a very light metal on metal. Everything up front (brakes and such) are fine, so i am wondering if I have a bearing like a 2WD vehicle. If so, is it hard to get to for checking?

Message: All drive shafts and axles have wheel bearings. Check your breaks the metal on metal could be your breakpads starting to go. Most new wheel bearings are sealed and non serviceable. All you could do is just spray brake parts cleaner around the wheel bearing to help lubricate it a little. You could also check your cvs and boots to make sure those are fine as well.

Message: Is it safe to move the rubber housings from around those joints as long as you don't get any dirt or water in the joints? I thought about checking those, but didn't know what to expect inside.
Oh, and it isn't my brakes, they were just changed a few months back and are still plenty good.

Message: NOOOOO!!!! Use this to inject grease in all your boots. 2 person job one pumps the grease the other pooks the needle telling you to stop the first moment you see any grease:

Message: Rubber boot? Is that what you are talking about?? The rubber boot is a cover for the cv joint, there is grease under that boot. One of mine split and the grease was in my wheelwell. Took dodge 4 tries to get the boot on right. yep 4 times I breought that 02 to them to fix. They kept putting the clamp to far in towards the middle of the steering arm. That boot clamp should be right up against the hub about a couple inches away, not stretched, with the wheel pointing straight ahead.
Ball Joints perhaps???

Message: Anything that has rubber and seals metal from the weather basically. Cv-boots, ball-joint boots, half-shaft boots. Injecting grease is an alternative to replacing them as once the grease runs out it splits and has to be replaced.

Message: Not my joints, and I am leaning towards CV now. After spending some time listening and driving, I think one of the CVs is going bad. No biggy, it's got some time left so I'll start saving for the replacement now.

Message: Back to the wheel bearings... You can't just replace the wheel bearings. I just found this out yesterday when at the autoparts store. Unfortunately, you have to buy the whole hub assembly for $128! That was a bad suprise to me going into the parts store expecting to find some $12 bearings. I've got a high frequency vibration when going 75+mph. The faster I go, the worse it gets. Now I haven't even jacked my truck up and yanked around on the wheels yet, but I think it's safe to assume it's the bearings. Of course, I'll try that before I replace them.
Hey, some good news to all that need new front rotors...they are only $28ea.! That's a product of the whole hub assembly being one. Problem is, I need both...Urrrgghhhh.. Another happy day!
