What are the best mods to get the most low end torque out of my 99 318? (including stuff like intake manifolds, cams, and other parts)

I haven't yet added my Flowmaster, but when I added my open-element air-filter housing, it started getting more air easily and not only improved my mileage, but seems to have added torque. I noticed it a LOT yesterday when I towed my boat to the lake. It used a TON less gas than last summer and didn't complain a bit about the extra weight, except when stopping :p!

Torque is a lot more difficult to produce than HP. Fortunatly, the factory has done most of the work for you. Of course, making sure everything is working correctly and is well tuned should be your first step.

An intake manifold swap will probably cost you power there. An open element air cleaner often improves it a little. Ignition boxes are usually pointless. Cat back systems are worthless, and may actually cost you power. A full exhaust system with headers can gain some power, but that's pretty expensive power - usually around $1,000 for 10 ft/lbs.

1. Use a computer programmer. I used Hypertech on my 2001 5.9. Made a huge differance. Best money I've spent on that truck.

2. Swap rear gears. Clearly the most bang for the buck. Depending on where/how you drive, go to 3.92 or 4.10.

These two simple changes will cost less than $700, and will make that truck drive like a whole new vehicle. You'll be amazed.

Hey bob, where can I get my hands on one of those Hypertech toys, and how much do they run? Mind you, I'd be using it on a 5.2L from '95.

I got mine from Jegs; it was on sale last year. Shop around, lots of places sell them
