Subject: 0-60 on 1991 318 Dakota
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I have a 1991 Dakota Sport, 4x4, automatic, 318 v8 engine. I went out today and did a 0-60 test on it... and it was worse than most cars quarter mile time! (16.22 seconds...)

Shouldn't it be better than this? I know the only mod I have done is a K&N drop-in, but I figured it would be better than this even stock since it's a light truck with a 318...

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Alex

The Shelby edition 1989 Dakota with essentially the same engine package, was clocked at 16.4 at mid 80's mph with 3.90 gearing and being 2WD, I'd say your time was damned good, all things considered.

Hey guys, thanks for all the answers so far.

Just a couple of things.... Maybe I worded it wrong, but the 0-60 was 16.22, not the quarter mile. And, yes, I would call it a light truck compared to something like a Ram 3500 with a Cummins.

Thanks again,
Alex

Okay, well that's pretty bad, but the pre-Mag was so anemically set up any little load (like 4wd) really slows it down, but it should do better than that. And, it's not really that lite. Yes, compared to a CTD 3500, but with a minimal hp 318, 3800 lbs there-abouts (even the Shelby is 3600+lbs)....Mild for a 350hp 318, but 170hp smogger.....that's a hefty load.

I just did a 0-60mph in my 01 R/T, time was just over 6, steady averaging 6.4....it's slightly modified, but I was checkng the improvements after removing the thermatic fan.... I also just had it weighed after dropping off some engines for recylcing, it came in at 4080lbs with me in it.... that's also on bald assed tires starting at the side of the highway in dirt dust & debris too, and a rev limiter issue at 5300rpm that only allows 3/4 throttle through first gear (even then it's fishtailing off the line!).... I'm curious what'd it do if I was WOT the whole way.... soon I'll be able to say, "I'm gonna smoke a porsche in a truck that weighs twice as much" hehehehehe///
this is a N/A vehicle to...no NOS, no super charger.... just engine mods and tweeks....

Sorry for you pre-magnum guys....... :)

well the point i was trying to make was that the HP to weight ratio of any vehicle needs to be considered when comparing 0-60 or 1/4 mile times.
so i wouldnt expect my 95 cc 4X4 5.2L dakota to be as fast as a short box SC v-6 if both are stock.
on the other hand i would ask the v-6 to pull a 10,000lb trailer through the snow neither(ive lost track of how many times some one will bring a full size pickup into one of my shops complaining that they got beat off the stoplight by grandma in a 79 honda civic lol)
i have a customer that has a dakota sport that weighs in at 1800lbs becaust he had a custom shop make fiberglass hood, fenders and a fiberglass box shell with a soft cover (no bed floor)aluminum radaitor ,plastic side and rear windows , i think he even had them make fiberglass bumbers for it all so he could street race it . i guess everyone has to have a hobby
