Subject: chip off the old block IP: Logged
Message: I'm rebuilding my 91 Dakota 318 and when I took the intake manifold off I noticed a chip off the interior of the block on the left side back of the cam gear. It looks like it's not bothering anything and their's nothing in the pan so I'm thinking it was cast that way. I'm wondering if the blocks were cast that way prior to machining. Also the intake manifold doesn't have a belly pan and I think the engine is not the original with that year truck.

Message: Just looked at my '89 and I think I'm seeing what you're talking about. Looks like a little ridge running back from the last lifter bore, and the last bit, about the size of a pencil eraser, is missing. Looks like it's done that way to encourage oil to drain there. The TBI intakes were different from prior LA intakes. They had an integrated exhaust crossover, and not a removable belly pan.
