Message: you did, sort of......you saw a tag line from a radio show in the 1940's that was sponsored by Autolite. I was so compelled by it, I switched to Autlite plugs and never looked back. I use them in everything I own, from mowers to chainsaws, to weedeaters, etc.
Back then, it was called the Electric Autolite company and it produced starters, generators, alternators, coils, wiring harnesses, headlights, batterys, switches, points, rotors electric motors for cars and trucks. It was OEM on Willys, chrysler, Hudson, nash, and Packard car lines in the 1940's-50's, plus I think Studebaker too.
Ford bought the automotive OEM division in the 1960's and for a while, you could see Ford/autolite on the carb cover on Ford trucks.
Ford divested the line in the 1970's to Allied Signal.

Message: I was running Bosch 4s before I got my MSD ignition (its recommended to not run Platinum plugs with high spark ignition systems). I think they performed better than the 3923s personally. Of course at $8 a pop, they should....
I recently switched back to Champions. The 3923s are shorter than the OEM recommended Champions. It seems to me that the Champions will put the spark in the cylinder where its supposed to be.
I still have my Boschs with less than 10,000 miles on them.

Message: The correct application for the 4.7 engine is the autolite 5224 plug. Check their online web site for further information.........and no matter what others say, you are always right when you use autolite!

Message: I personally have a hard time buying anything made by Allied Signal... They used to make really good oil filters (Fram) and plugs (Autolite) but the quality/craftsmanship of the filters has really suffered lately (I can't speak to the spark plugs specifically but working in the auto industry, I can tell you that when cost reduction activities are launched, nothing is spared). If you don't believe me check out the filter study here (this link is to the conclusions page, click on 'oil filter test' if you want to see the tests, there is also an interesting email from an Allied Signal engineer in there):

Perhaps the Autolite plugs are good but nobody has explained how a plug with a shorter tip (3923's) will perform better than the stock Champions with at least 5 mm more extension into the combustion chamber??? Can someone explain this or are we all just sheep following the herd of Autolite 3923 users?

Message: No need to follow the herd, oz. Just remember which plugs are ignition engineered for your vehicle. And don't try to compare two totally opposite products to on another. Autolite was a pioneer in the spark plug business and in Fostoria Ohio, hundreds of dedicated men and women turn out fine quality products for hundreds of vehicles. The suppressor is an Autolite innovation.
Try them, you'll like them!

Message: harlow,
thanks for the reply. Do you work there? Is there a reason other than personal preference that you stand so strongly behind Autolites? I'm an engineer that works in the auto industry and a gear head on the side. I am usually the guy that looks for technical data before I buy anything. I have seen a distinct lack of data regarding this whole spark plug debate. What I do know is that copper is a better conductor than platinum and therefore is a better spark plug material. I also know that a projected (power) tip is also an advantage. This is why I have a hard time accepting that the 3923's will perform better than the stock plugs that have a longer tip (provided they are both copper core?). Perhaps Autolite makes a plug with a comparable tip to the Champions but I don't know for sure...
If it all comes down to personal preference, that's fine. If you are steering people towards the Autolites because you are a dedicated employee, I admire that but for me I am really looking for facts. Thanks again.

Message: No, (chuckle) I do not work for Autolite, but I have applied for a postion there.
I endorse Autolite because of the strong performance I receive from their spark plugs. I enjoy faster starts, smoother pickup, and better fuel economy. I notice Autolite lasts longer under normal driving conditions. The pinging is reduced when compared to factory Champions.
All in all, its a winning situation. Throw in a competitive price and a 2 year unlimited mileage guarantee & you have a winner!
Don't hesitate, see your friendly autolite dealer today or visit their website at www.autolite.com.

Message: I went ahead and bought a set of the 3923's... I compared them to the 5224's and the electrode is maybe .060" shorter. The counter person said that they were discontinued but still had a set in stock. I wonder what the replacement ones are? The stock ones are 5224 but there is no listing for a colder 5223...

Message: Good choice oz.
However, www.autolite.com lists the 5224 as the correct plug for the 4.7...unless you have a different motor.
You'll be pleasantly surprised at the pep and smooth idle those ignition engineered Autolite spark plugs provide!
Congrats!

Message: The last time I bought AutoLites was when I got a set of six for my Mazda MPV. I looked at the six of them and one of the plugs electrode was a lot shorter than that on the other plugs. I really had to tweak the thing to adjust the gap.
I saw this as a manufacturing defect and a sign of poor quality control and have not bought any since.
My Yamaha SR500 that is 20 years old runs great with a Bosch platinum in it, despite the slight oil fouling... I think I will go with the Bosch on my first replacement at 30,000.

Message: Sorry to hear about your misfortune dave. DId you verify you had the correct application for your vehicle?
Autolite pioneered the resistor sparkplug, the extended tip, and more of their sparkplugs are used in aviation applications than any other brand.
From bumper to tailight, you are always right with Autolite.

Message: I understand that this is an old post, but I was checking previous threads to find a good gap for my spark plugs when I ran into this thread. I respect that wilcox guy, but I hate when people act that way. It bugs the hell out of me. They slow things down when they dont give those hard facts that we really need. I dont like them people who try to act like a salesman when what I need is a mechanic. He did all of that research and he backed autolite so much but he isnt working for them. He needed a life. I have nothing against that brand. Sorry I pulled this old thread up again. This thing just bothered me, so I had to bring it back up. Anyways, sorry again.
