Subject: R/T really worth it?? IP: Logged
Message: I’m thinking about trading my 98 rc v6 dak up for a cc r/t. my dak is one owner auto 2WD 52k on the clock. i should be able to get at least $6k out of my current truck (i hope)
I just need more power!!! If i keep modding my v6 I’m just going to throw money away. If i spend enough money to run with the v8 daks, i could just buy a stock r/t with the cash...
How does an r/t handle and most importantly how does it do in the snow? It will be my daily driver; gas mileage isn’t a real big concern. I just want to have the v8 rumble!!
Maybe i could just keep my current dak and get an r/t as a second truck. How much would i be spending for a 98-01 cc r/t nicely equipped? Around 10-15k??
Your input will be appreciated

Message: i went to the drag races saturday and there was a R/T there. It ran a 16.9 in a quarter of a mile and my 97 dak with a 318, 3.92 positive traction rear end, shift kit, and K&N airfilter runs 14.9. so if i was you i would just get a dakota with a 318 instead of wasting more money on a R/T. My dak is an automatic too.

Message: The guy at the track must not have known what he was doing. The R/T shouldn't run that slow. Don't know about the other truck. The R/T aint good in the snow with the stock tires. Maybe if you get better suited tires. Otherwise the R/T handles great. It has a stronger sway bar so it doesn't through you around as much in the turns. R/T lower 1" = lower center of gravity = better handling.
You might have some trouble finding those years with so few miles.

Message: HA! 16.9 out of an R/T? Who was driving, nobody with any skills. A stock R/T should run in the 15s no problem. a RC should run in the low 15s, and a CC should run a mid to high 15 STOCK...

Message: I live in northern Indiana, 30 miles from Lake Michigan, and we get snow. I bought my '00 in January and it handles better with the stock Goodyears than my old '92 318 with new Goodrich Radial T/A's. Don't get me wrong, it would never make is as a snow plow, but I didn't get stuck, either. The limited slip diff. makes a big difference. I kinda wish I had kept my old '92 for the winter and kept the R/T a virgin.
As far as handling, it handles great. With the beefed up suspension and the wide tires it hugs the road. I took my neighbor, who has an '02 V6, for a ride and he couldn't believe the difference. He said his bounces all over the road, expecially on curves, when he hits bumps. The R/T just loves them curves. I recently drove it to Indy in a VERY stiff cross wind and didn't even feel it.
You should be able to find one in the price range you mentioned. I found mine on e-bay in January and paid $14,000 with 9,200 miles on it.
I'm glad you don't care about the mileage, because it sucks. Well, maybe not sucks, but it ain't great. All that power comes at a price. I get a pretty consistant 12.5 - 13, with an occasional 13.5-14. On my trip to Indy, I did manage to sqeak out 16!! But, I don't care, either. The way it looks and the looks it gets, makes it all worth it.

Message: As far as handling the R/T outhandles the SVT and Toyota TRD Tacoma. Many of you I'm sure are aware of the truck trend magazine test that posted these numbers through a slalom :
Tacoma TRD - 63.13 mph (3125lb)
Dakota R/T - 63.23 mph (3850lb)
Ford SVT Lightning - 60.61 (4670lb)

Message: I have heard also that the early r/t(s) were faster. Is that true? Although the fuel mileage is worse with an r/t, i don't think i would notice it as much. I’m pretty sure that my v6 has a 15 gal tank, and the v8 trucks have a 20? Gallon tank. It would cost more to fill but should last about as long.
One of the main reasons i want an r/t, is because i am always pushing my 3.9 to redline. With more power, i shouldn’t have to push the engine as hard. Thus, saving wear and GAS! (And this guy in a 5.0 has shown me his taillights on several occasions)
I don't intend on taking my truck off road, i just don't want to get stuck (Ohio winters) in the snow. I put 300 lbs of sand in my dak, and it does great in the snow. I have the stock 15s with Goodyear wrangler rt/s tires. I imagine that those tires on an r/t wouldn’t look so hot lol. How much slower are the CC r/t(s) then the RC ones? I still want a cc because more room (speakers) and a lil more weight.
sorry for all the ?s but i really want to look into every aspect before i decide to buy.

Message: That weight figure is very much on the light side. The CC R/T weighs in at over 4100. The RC R/T weighs 3850....Hmmm, makes you wonder if they posted the RC weight on the CC..
The RC 4.7L auto weighs almost 3800.

I think I'll drive this truck until I die.

Message: In order to make the best decision you need to drive an R/T to FEEL the difference. The tight steering, lack of body roll in corners and the acceleration that these trucks offer is very gratifying. With sand bags and studs my truck can go anywhere in the winter. There will be people on this site that will talk trash about R/T's but it's only because they don't have one.

Message: DURAFORCE, That sounds like a plan. As soon as I get the rest of my bills paid off, (fall I hope) I will start really looking at r/t's.
If I look now, I would likely buy one. and then be strapped for cash (the American way LOL)
I just wanted info on the r/t and i got 99% positive :-)
(the snow thing scares me though, truck will be my daily driver)
once again, thank you all for the input!!

I have owned both 318 and 360 there is a huge difference.. anyone with a 318 that beats an r/t means the r/t is stock and 318 has some money into it.. right now i have the r/t and lovin it... especially cause right now im running low 13s.. and beating all the gay @$$ turbos that think they are all that... the only thing i recommed looking out for is gas mileage.. if you dont drive like me youll be fine.. :)
(by the way im strokin it and have future plans for NOS [ 2 ] (1) 50 shot and (1) 75 shot)
i love racing cars with my truck cause if i lose (yeah right) i have an excuse...

Message: I have a 01 R/T CC. It does low 15's in the 1/4 with only minor mods (plugs, thermostat, fine tuning). The handling on it is great. It has like zero body roll even after 60k miles on it. Gas milage is kinda poor at 15 highway and it totaly sucks in the snow with stock tires on it. But all things considered, I wouldn't trade it for any 318 out there.

Message: I have a stock 318 RC. I would have liked to bought the R/T at the time. I have never beat a stock R/T in the quarter, but considering the price(new), hp, and torque differences, I came closer than I should have(average 1/2 second, maybe a little less, I expected over 1 sec difference). As for winter, they're both lousy, the R/T may be better than mine, but look at the torque on both of 'em! Better than mine would be 2 sand bags in the summer instead of 3.
Either way you won't fear any light truck, or any car with a reso-fart-nator-can, beyond that do what I do and only race while towing a boat. There's a dak specialty!

Message: I have no idea where they came up with that weight for a CC R/T Dakota, but they musta weighed it on the moon. 3,850 #'s Right.
I have a CC 4.7L 5 Speed and with some lightening it weighs 4020 with 3/4 of a tank of gas.
And I know my Dak is lighter than a stock CC 5.9L automatic R/T.

Message: It's this simple the R/T is worth every penny. I don't think I'll ever get rid of my 02 CC. It handles better than any other truck I have driven and I kill my buddy every time I race him in his 01 CC 4.7 You should go with R/T all of the way. Good luck trying to keep tires on it though, I've went through three sets of tires in 20,000 miles, God I love the posi burnouts.
