Subject: Bucking Dakota - Distributer gear? IP: Logged
Message: Man does my 1992 Dakota buck at 50-55mph. Originaly we thought it was the trans but after a $3k replacement it's not. I installed and new timing chain and the bucking is now at 55-60 mph. I see in the V6 section that changing the distributer gear will help resolve the issue. I see pictures of a distributer but no gear on the bottom, like a chevy. How do you get to the distributer gear? Do you have to remove the intake and cam?

Message: You don't have to remove the intake. The gear is what the bottom of the dist. shaft slots into. The gear also has a shaft on the underside of it, this drives the oil pump.
Remove the dist., get some very long neddle nose plyers and grasp the gear twisting as it comes straight up. Make sure to note the direction the slot on top of the gear is pointing when you remove it and be sure to install the new one exactly the same. As well, some assm. lube on the gear wouldn't hurt.

Message: My 92 5.2L likes to buck and it is starting to puff black smoke and also has a severe lose of HP. I was told it could be be the map sensor over loading the engine with fuel. I don't know where the map sensor is either.

Message: I had the same on my '92/5.2/auto/4x4/230,000 mi./Amsoil everywhere. Took it to the dealer. After $500+, new distributor, wires, plugs, & fuel system cleaning, it still did it. I then found a real mechanic; called him and b4 I finished describing the problem, he had the answer: remove & replace the distributor drive gear/shaft bushing for $200. I gave the Dak to him. 2 hrs later he called me to come pick it up, and he said he was wrong. It was only going to cost me $100. The bushing was not worn; the distributor was not installed correctly. It was "off" by 1 tooth causing the PCM to try to keep correcting the timing, which is the same situation as if the bushing is worn. (Under a load, the "slop" is taken out of the timing sequence but when cruising, ie 65mph/flat terrain/cruise control engaged, the "slop" takes over). He asked me what kind of oil I was using, and when I told him Amsoil, he said "That's why the bushings not worn." It hasn't missed a beat since. Since finding this site, I have replaced my intake pan gasket w/ the Hughes kit; end of oil consumption and a temporary end to detonation. It's pinging again. 'Going to try disconnecting electrical power from the pcm. After the intake fix, it ran fantastic for about a week. No pinging; idle was smooth w/out a miss. I'm also going to get the old water bottle out and spray a mist into the throttle body to de-carbon the piston/heads.

Message: Well the new distributor gear and bushing are installed. The Dakota is still a bucking bronco when you reach speeds over 50 and let up on the gas and start to cruise. I think I have a Ford disguised as a Dodge. This really stinks. The new not rebuilt $3000.00 trans and overdrive unit are still under warrenty! $1000 new A/C system down the tube too. So this paint peeling, kidney shaking 4x4 is going to pasture. Now someone tell me why I should buy a Dakota again if no one can fix it? I will not downgrade to a Ford. Shall I upgrade to a Chevy or is this not an upgrade? I like the size, style and V8 engine that the Dakota model offers but that shaking has gotta go.

Message: Chevy is NOT an upgrade; and they have lots of hack service departments too. Are you sure the gear is positioned correctly ?

Message: Sorry if I offended anyone about the Chevy comment but my last one I drove 396,000 miles. Rust sent it to the grave. I really like this Dakota but I'm only at 112,000 and so far since 65k miles and $5k in chasing the down the bucking.
I was unable to get the gear out so I took it to the dealer, Fair Oaks Dodge. $275 to replace the gear and bushing. Are they are a hack service center too. They are all cetified mechanics, No? Maybe the gear is off. How do I check it?
Thanks for responding. Eric

Message: Sometimes it is better to apply knowledge to a problem, instead of throwing money at it.
Take it to a certified mechanic that knows Dodges, not neccessarily the dealer.

Message: Good advice - seems like you're throwing way too much money at a shotgun approach to fixing this. Probably best to just take it to someone qualified to diagnose and fix it, and stop doing needless repairs.

Message: Absolutly good advice but that is where I am lost. Fair Oaks Dodge is a five star dealer. Aren't all mechcanics at a dealer certified on the brand of truck they sell?
Anyhow do you know of any Dodge Specialist near Northern Virginia or Maryland? Are you guys Dodge Specialist?

Message: If you're that confident in their certified mechanics, why don't you just tell them to diagnose and fix the problem, with no unneeded extra repairs ? If they tell you "it could be this, it could be that" then no, they don't know what they're doing no matter how many fancy certificates they might have...

Message: It's bucking when you're cruising at speed? Or as you're getting up to speed? If it's bucking as you're accelerating, it might just be your fuel filters. My bronc II did that awhile back, I changed both the filters and it fixed the problem.

Message: I replaced the fuel filter at every other oil change, 6000 miles. I do have some hesitation while I am accelerating. The bucking starts when I reach 50 mph and let up a little on the gas to cruise. If I take my foot off the pedel the truck runs smooth. If I keep the pedel hammered it runs smooth.

Message: Well, I found out that the MAP sensor is located at the front of the throttle body. Definately helped for a bit. Cost = $80. We did a compression check...it was ok. We started pulling plug wires while it was running in drive with foot on brake and a little throttle to see if there was lose of power or a dead cylinder. Found three dead cylinders with good plugs. Then I pulled the feul injection rails and found that 4 of my injectors were plugged to the top. Cleaned them with carb cleaner, that red spray tube works wonders. Remember to point the top of the injector away from your face, do not stick anything in the injectors, and non-lithium(?) grease is needed to reseal the o-rings when reinstalling. We flushed the fuel lines with air hose until it cough, hooked it back up to the fuel pump until it spilled out the rails and repeated until no more junk came out. After replacing 5 o-rings and a total of three attempts to reinstall fuel rails...the Dakota has a new set of legs. Cost = $0 Had the cleaner and o-rings in the garage...
