Message: My problem is different, I have a 98 durango with 146k. recently saw oil leaking below the vehicle-mechanic confirms oil press is too high and blowing out the filter gasket (filter blows up like a ballon as well), is there a press relief valve in the pump ? I'm stumped ??

Message: The milky sludge in the 4.7L oil filler is a known condition and there is a TSB on it. Not to say that it is nothing to worry about in everyones situation, but in most cases it can be fixed with the redesigned oil filler. These engines are known for blown head gaskets so if there is a substantial amount of milky sludge I would check in to it.
The crankcase sludge is a known problem also. When I bought my '00 QC I was advised to only use 5w-30 by the tech. He said that in his training they were told that 10w-30 had a higher tendency to sludge up the oil pump screen. That and the oil ports are so small in the 4.7L that the slightest contaminants can block a valve lash adjuster or bearing oil port. I've only used 5w-30 since new and I drive mostly highway miles and change my oil every 3K miles. I developed a noisy valve lash adjuster and planned on replacing all of them. I ran across an engine cleaner called Auto-Rx and decided to give it a try(given that these engines will develope sludge). It's farily expensive, but is well worth the price! My valve lash adjuster is quiet now and judging by my oil filter I'd say that Auto-Rx effectively cleaned out any sludge and carbon that was in my crankcase.
These engines are also known to have oil pump failure. I'm planning on replacing my oil pump this winter just as a precaution. The $200. in parts is a lot cheaper than loosing an engine.

Message: engine oil pump is pos. disp. higher engine speed means more oil volume and higher oil pressure.there is a press relief valve that opens to oil pan controling pressure.stuck valve could cause low press idle if open/high press at higher rpm if stuck closed.

•Built using the updated piston to prevent high cylinder temperature leading to oil sludge over time
•Oversized drilling of oil drain back holes in heads & block to prevent oil sludging
•Updated timing tensionsers to prevent premature timing failures
•Built using MLS(multi layer steel) head gaskets to prevent head gasket failure during hotter months
•Built with all new valve seats pressed in to prevent valve seat fallout as OEM engine did(most vendors do not replace)
•Dyno tested unit we run test every 4.7 on a propane dyno tester to prevent any start failures

Message: I have a 01 4.7 dakota 5 speed. An I
notice while driving yesterday that the
oil pressure was low while driving it sat
on the 1st white mark the whole time an
would go to normal a few times but would
drop back to down. IS that the oil pump
going bad or another problem?
Thanks.
