Subject: 4x4 ON light IP: Logged
Message: During a recent snow here in Massachusetts, I had my 4WD HI locked in. Normally there is a light on the dash that says 4WD ON, or 4x4 ON, I can't remember. That light wasn't on. If I moved my T-case shifter forward a little, the light came on. Then I tried 4WD LOW, and it was the same way. It's like having to jiggle a light switch. My 4WD worked fine, but the indicator light wasn't on. Does anyone know what it will involve to get that fixed?

Message: Sounds like the switch in your transfer case is gone... Just go to your local dealer and pick up a new one. Its called "Transfer Case Mode Switch", and it'll run you about $30.

Message: Thanks for the info Gamer...
Do you know what I need to do to put it in? I'm new to Dakotas and still haven't learned a whole lot about them. My '95 Ranger I could take apart in the parking lot, but the Dakota I'm still learning. I don't have anywhere or any tools to work, so if it's more extensive than a few wrenches and a screw gun, I'll have to take it in. I think I might be under warranty for that though. Please advise...and thanks.

Message: Dude, its a light that tells you if your in 4x4..just look at the t-case shifter. Its pretty easy to tell if your in 4wheel anyway.

Message: Yeah, Levey, I'm well aware of when i'm in 4wd and when I'm not. I said I was new to Dakotas, I nver said I didn't know anyting about 4x4's. That's why I was asking. If I can take the console that's around the shifter off, and change that little piece, then I would. If someone starts to mention dropping the t-case...forget that. I was just looking for a little technical knowledge.

Message: hey levey, the light on the dash could be to indicate whether the front hubs are locked or not. kinda like on the other chrylsler jeeps. so even if the tc is engaged, teh hubs may not, so you need a light to tell you if you are actually in 4 wheel drive, dude
