Subject: shifting to early IP: Logged
Message: I am looking at buying a 99 dakota r/t, but when I test drove it, it shifted real early. From first to second it was around 2000-2500rpms, even when fully accelerating. From 2nd - 3rd and 3rd - 4th it also was sluggish, but not as bad as the 1st-2nd. I just wanted to know if getting the dealer to reset the timing comp, or buying a chip to adjust shift timing would fix this, or if it was mechanical related. It also had a squeeky belt, not sure which one it is cause I didn't have alot of time to look under the hood. There were alot of similar posts, but none were quit the problem this r/t was having.

Message: Were you just driving with a light foot? I have a 2000 R/T and have found that the harder I stomp on it the higher rpms get before it shifts. Driving it hard the shift point is about 4900 which is still way below the max recommended rpm for the 5.9 magnum.I understand that these points are factory set in the pcm. If you were stepping on it and it was shifting at 2000-2500 it needs to be looked at (could be t/v cable adjustment dunno)

Message: It's possible that the TV cable needs adjustment (too much slack in it?). A dealer cannot (nor will not) raise the shift points. That will have to be done by flashing a new program into the computer by a performance shop with capabilities (KRC in FL, PHP aka Leach on west coast, B&G in MI, etc.) and at a substantial cost. MP offers a hipo computer for the 99 (if I'm not mistaken) which raises the shift points, rev limiter, speed limiter as well as increase timing and the air/fuel curve. If you opt for the mentioned, aftermarket shops, they can do all that but with more flexiblility too and at the the same price that they charge for just going for raised shift points. HTH.

Message: Well I was looking at getting a jetchip if I purchased the truck, but wasn't 100% sure if it would fix the problem. Would it be basically the same thing as you were talking about above?

Message: AFAIK, the jetchip doesn't adjust shift points ... only timing and air/fuel curve.
