Subject: off road idle problem

Message:
I have a 99 Dakota ex-cab with a 5.2L and 5 speed trans. I have been having intermittent idle problems all when off road or on a rough dirt road. I will be creeping along and when I press in the clutch when coming to a stop the rpm's drop straight off to zero. The only other thing that I have noticed is when in town and I come to a stop the RPM's will drop to about 400 then shoot up to 600-750 then back down. It wil bounce 2-3 times before coming to a rest and will then settle at 650. I Have changed Plugs, Wires, Cap and Rotor. with no changes. Truck has 55K miles

It is more than likely the little idle control motor that mounts on the side of the throttle body. What happens is it gets gummed up inside and the motor gets weak. The PCM sees that the motor isn't ideling at the correct rpm and it sends a signal to the little stepper motor on the throttle body to adjust the idle rpm. Only, the idle motor doesn't respond fast enough. Therefore, the PCM increases the signal/voltage to the motor to further adjust the idle and then it over shoots as a result. It continues this back and forth up and down rpm catch-up (chasing its tail) because the stepper motor isn't responding to the PCM's output signals fast enough. There was one on Ebay today for $10.00. I can't remember the heading it was under. It seems like I did a search under cars/trucks/assessories/parts and 5.9. A new one cost about $50.00 at the dealer. Sometimes you can clean them. Most of the time you have to replace them.
