Just bought a Dak. Noticed when I was changing the air filter that the foam gasket on the bottom of the air cleaner that sits on the TB was completely dry-rotted. Got me to thinking that instead of finding a replacement, I should just get an open element and K&N filter. I know you're supposed to get a slight power increase and maybe even better mileage, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if that'll effect emissions. In my area we have emissions tests every 2 years...
Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Don't fool with K&N. Cotton allows more air-flow than paper, but traps less dirt and such. You can get a foam filter cheaper and it allows for high-flow AND good trapping.

Now I ***HIGHLY*** recomend an open-element filter-housing like mine if you want to notice both mileage and power increases. I have heard that if you have a true dual exhaust or one that allows more exhaust out and you do this mod, it adds power but may harm mileage. I'll know soon enough, when I get my exhaust.

I just found this post - I know it's a year old but it highlights the bad information that you might run across in forums. Talk to any mechanic, high flow cotton-oiled filters outperform any paper filter and get better filtration as they get dirty - while still out performing paper filters in flow and filtration. Do your own research - see for yourself.
