Here is the story. I was driving down the road and all of a sudden no more 3rd gear or overdrive. So I downshift it into 2 and pull onto a less buzy side street. Light shows up on the dash. I try and go reverse and nothing also! start to go again and it kinda sticks in 1st longer then it should and bucks into 2nd. I can feel it go to 3 but it is like it is not there. Slipping? So I got it towed to the dealer and they say it is some valve in the tranny. But the part is backordered. Anyone else have this happen/ What was it?
I have the slt all wheel drive automatic tranny. It is a 2002 with only 14500 miles. I dont drive much.
Thanks in advance.
Michael

You need a new valve body most likely. It sounds like the plate that holds the shift solenoids broke free. This has been one of the ONLY occasional problems with the early 45rfe trannys. They have a revised plate and new torque specs for the retention bolts among other things on the newer trans. At the dealer I work for we have seen a few of these but not many and none of which caused any damage to the clutches or any other internal hard part. Just the valve body. Usually the bolts are pushed out of the valve body and also take some of the body with them. Sometimes they can be repaired but almost always they have to be replaced. You do NOT need an overhaul if that is the problem, don't let them sell you that.

Tranny got fixed this week. Come to find out it was not the valve body but a weld on one of the drums broke. Sending metal into the clutches and drums. The repair person that has been working trannys for years said that this is the first he has ever seen. Alot better now.
