With a 99' 5.2 what types of gains ( HP - Torque ) can i get with adding a Gibson cat back, home brew 3" cold air intake with a 6-9 cone K&N filter,TB spacer, and boring my stock TB by taking off the extra material? I know this is only a educated guess.

Send me the money you are going to spend on the TB spacer and I'll kick you in the nuts---You'll gain just as much HP--They are a big fat waste of money on a dak...Read up before you buy parts...don't learn the hard way like me

If I was going for raw horses, I'd save for a decent turbo. turbo-charged V8's are nothing but power.

Not sure myself, but I'd check the V8 Performance website. I don't want my engine turbo-charged. I want the most I can get out of it without adding non-factory parts.

You'll get some benefits from your cold air kit and cat back. Like someone else indicated, skip the spacer, it's useless on your motor.
The iat relocation is nearly free, and a decent modification. If you have about $1k, you can slap a shift kit, torque converter, and tranny cooler in there. That mod was the biggest improvement on my R/T.

dabald, the trans-go shift kit how hard is it to install? With all the mods, i have noticed more power and better response, but my problem is still my auto tranny. I works like it should, but the when it shifs it seems to soom at normal driving, causing dead spots. Will the shif kit fix this or do i need the power programers that plug into the computer?

I noticed the sudden upshift problem too.
The shift kit helps this some what at low speeds, but helps it even more, the harder you are accelerating. The shift kit does seem to allow the shift points to delay a bit longer than before.
I drive around town with the O/D OFF, unless I go over 55 mph, which is when I'll engage O/D.
I had a local Transmission shop install a Trans Go shift kit, a Mopar 2400 RPM stall converter, a Moroso Tranny cooler, and some new bands and a new clutch pack.
Truck has 54K miles.
All together, they had the truck 2 days. It was probably a 1-1/2 day job, but the bands and clutch pack were an unknown, until they had the tranny out, delaying completion until the next morning, waiting on more parts. The clutch pack and bands showed some wear, so I had them replaced at the same time. The shop wanted to do a complete tranny rebuild. After much deliberation, it was decided to do the packs and bands only.
I watched him work on parts of the valve body. The shift kit came from KRC, and it had a video with it. I considered tackling the installation. I would gladly pay a professional to do this job again, as it was WAY more suited to someone who really knows transmissions, and rebuilds them daily. There are too many opportunities for small mistakes, that could be catastrophic.
Parts and labor, just over a grand. Was it worth it. On the second tank of gas since the tranny work, and I must say, the truck launches MUCH harder. It now hits nice and hard, as it catches second in a big way under hard acceleration. The shifts are no longer those long drawn out ordeals. I can't wait to get it on the track. I'm guessing I improved a minimum of .5 seconds in the 1/4 mile!

dabald,
What type of clutches and bands did you go with? I've been told that the only way you can get away from the Chrysler ATF-4 is to put different clutches and bands in there.

What does the 2400 stall converter do for you that the shift kit would or could not do?
I am not going to race this, but i want it to shift quicker at all the shift points without breaking my neck. thanks

I really can't say what one would do without the other, because I went from stock, to current.
I made my decision, based on discussion with two other Dakota owners, that this combo would be great for my hot street setup.
I have been in drag cars that slam into gear, so let me restate the firmness of the shift.
The 2400 RPM is the smallest stall high performance converter, available for this transmission. Some torque converters for this application are 3600 RPM, so this is mild by comparison. I may be incorrect, but the stock T.C. must be like 1200 RPM?
anyway
I bet just the shift kit, would be a nice improvement, but it is sooooo much work ,why not go the extra mile. The T.C. and cooler were an easy sell.

I have a factory tranny cooler from when i bought it new in 99'. I am still not sure what the 1200, or the 2400 rpm T. C. means as far as performance goes.

John-r,
In a nut shell, the torque convertor MULTIPLIES torque. Hence the name "torque CONVERTOR".

Here's an example"

Lets say that you have an engine that puts out 200ft-lbs of torque at 2400rpm.

Now lets say that you installed a 2400rpm torque convertor. The troque convertor slips until it hits 2400rpm.

So, lets assume you just launched off the line. At 2400 rpm you have 200ft-lbs at the crank. Your input shaft is only turning about 600rpm at take off. That is a 4 to 1 mutiplier meaning you actually made 800ft-lb of torque. This is only for a split second. As soon as you hit 25-2600rpm the 2400 stall has locked up and you no longer have any torque multiplication. For that 0.1sec it helps launch you out of the hole by multplying the torque. After that, everything else is equal.

john-r,
I couldn't begin to tell you what you need for your everyday/performance needs. If you only plan to cruise the hwys and race on the weekends then go slightly radical like a 2800-3000 stall. If you plan to do a lot of driving in town and at low speeds then I wouldn't go more than a 2400 stall. If you do a lot of stop and go driving the higher stall has a good chance of overheating the fluid and doing damage to the trans due to the heat. If you plan to make this thing a trailer queen and mostly just race it then go all the way with something like a 3000-3500 stall.

The higher the stall the more stress you put on everything in the drive line. Personally, I wouldn't go more than 2400. There are custom convertor manufacturers out there that will make you any stall you want. I would like about a 2000-2200 stall. You have to have that custom made.
