Subject: Check engine light IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 4.7 kota. my check engine light keeps coming on. usually it was after the car wash or after a good rain storm. Now its more often. Took it to my dealer and they "have no idea" why it comes on, and their advice is to just bring it in so they can erase the code(oh btw i bought a code reader and the code is P0442-evaporative emission control system leak detected).
Has anyone had similar problem or any advice?

Message: Chris, you don't need a code reader to get the MIL code. Just cycle your ignition on and off, on the 3rd time on it will display any codes stored in the PCM on the odometer/trip meter display.

Message: Chris,
Had the same thing on my 2000 4.7L, and took it to an independent mechanic who tightened the tubes coming off the fuel tank and the evaporative canister. Oher than that, he said it's the "needle in the haystack code", and usually is caused by a loose gas cap, as most posters here can attest to. gat a rag damp with gas, and clean off the seal area on the gas cap and flange. Also check to see if the gas cap rubber is in good condition, and be sure to hear it do a few clicks when you tighten it. If the code light still pops on after all that, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

Message: My check engine light came on on my 2000 DQC, went to the dealership and they said I of course had a bad battery...ended up taking it back a week later for the same thing and it was an crankshaft sensor.

Message: Where can you get a database of the codes? I have a 2000 SLT 4.7L and the on/off 3x trick works great but I can't find what P0320 and P0700 mean. This web site is great but only has codes for '97 Dakota.

Message: There has been a LOT of problems with evap codes on all of the 00 and new dodge vehicles. Most of which are faulty gas caps, not loose, just bad. It seems that the rollover valve in the cap gets corroded and stuck in the vent position. You can somtimes find it by sticking your nose down by the gas cap and if you smell gas you need to replace it. They are about $7-$15 dollars. It is not necessarily a "needle in a haystack code", your dealership should have an evap smoke machine that they can use to pinpoint the leak. It is not always easy but I have had very good success with using it. I would say about 8 out of 10 evap codes I get are from a faulty gas cap. Sometimes you can tell just by taking it off and looking at the bottom of it, usually they have a brown rust mark in the center (the valve is rusted). Hope this helps.
