Subject: Dodge is Screwing me on the Warranty IP: Logged
Message: A guy I know offered to sell his 02 Dakota 4X4 quad cab Sport truck to me because he needed a lower payment. He said it had a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty on it. I called the dealership where he bought it and they said that I would have to pay $50 to get it transferred over so I bought the truck. Today I tried to get the warranty transferred over and the Dodge Corporate office said that the 100k warranty was non tranferrable but the 70k warranty which it did not have was tranferrable. I now own an 02 dodge with 39k on the miles and No warrany whatsoever and I was lied to by the dealership. So, I am going to sell this truck immediately and you can bet that I will never own a Dodge as long as I live after this. I think I will probably go buy a Toyota or a Nissan and to hell with American vehicles after this experience and the last experience I had with my Blazer and Silverado. If anyone has any ideas on this you can contact me at (256) 922-3798
BTW, The dealership is Crown Motors in Gadsden,AL. Dont believe anything these people tell you!

Message: I bought a 1999 Dodge Dakota with 45K... It had 1 oil change since the owner bought it... I found that out the hard way when my oil pump went bad at 68k and I spun the main and lost compression in one cylinder. Carmax voided my warrantee due to “neglect and lack of records”.
After pulling apart the engine and realizing what had happened (the oil pump got clogged because my new clean oil washed the old oil down and clogged the pump). I’ve already eaten almost 4K because the carmax wouldn’t validate my warrantee, but in my eyes it’s well worth it. I really enjoy driving my Kota.
I was also impressed at how LITTLE damage was done by not changing the oil. Let me put it this way… the engine seized at 65MPR… After sitting on the side of the road for about an hour letting it cool I got it started and drove another 40+ miles… She pinged like hell, and wasn’t at 100%, but she still pushed better then 80% of the horsepower even after seizing.
I’m positive that had that motor had its oil changed like it should have, I could have gotten 100 mechanical miles out of it before I even started to see a difference. In fact I took it to Carmax about a month before it broke to have it appraised… In the comments section there was one comment… Engine runs strong.
I figured out something real quick… warrantee’s are a waste of money. My opinion is be glad you don’t have the warrantee and have a little fun with the truck. Don’t be afraid to tare down the engine yourself and rebuild it the way you want it to be.
By the way, that’s a screw up on your dealership, NOT dodge. Dodge makes great trucks, and just like any other if you take the time to take care of the truck, that truck will take care of you.
Good luck
Joe

Message: I do appreciate your words and I agree that it is a screw up on the part of the dealership. The problem is that the truck only has 39k miles and it is a 4X4. I didnt really want a 4X4 because of the cost increases when something goes bad with the transmission/transfer case, etc.... I bought it because it had a warranty and that was the ONLY reason. I dont really understand your point when you say to be glad I dont have a warranty. I should be glad when the transmission goes out and I have to pay $2500 to get it fixed now instead of the dealership handling it? This is a $17000 vehicle, not a beat around in work truck. I mention the transmission because that is the one real problem that all of them seem to have, that and warped brake rotors which it already has.

Message: I guess my point is the day my warrantee was voided was the day I began "playing" with my truck. This truck and my last car were the only two vehicles I've ever owned with a warrantee, and I personally like to work on my own vehicles.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I paid an extra $2000 for my warrantee on my Trans am after they replaced a $4000 transmission, but since I’ve owned my Dakota, I’ve needed 3 repairs, only one of them would have coasted me more then $200 and that was caused by the previous owner (my engine).
I’ve got a short bed, short cab 4X4 (or $X$ as I call it) with a 318. Those engines don’t ware out… The computers rarely go bad… The transmissions do have issues, but usually that only happens AFTER the first 100k.
I plan to drive my kota into its own grave. If you got screwed on the warrantee pay the $10 to take the dealership to small claims court, or just tell them your going to and maybe they will work something out with you. The last thing the dealership wants is an unhappy customer making waves in there kitty pool, and the last thing YOU want is to sell a good truck (epically at a loss) because of a bad experience.
It is a shame the warrantee doesn’t transfer but try talking to them, maybe they can work something out.
Best of luck

Message: Dear Mark:
Thank you for your recent email regarding your used 2002 Dodge Dakota.
Please don't blame DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation for a dealer
misleading you on a used vehicle. DaimlerChrysler Motors dealers are
independent businesses, and as such are responsible for addressing
concerns directly related to their sales departments, including their
personnel. DaimlerChrysler Motors has no authority to resolve disputes
involving retail sales agreements between an independent dealer and
their retail customer. I would suggest you pursue the matter directly
with dealership management.
Your dissatisfaction is regrettable, and I trust you will understand our
position. I hope this experience will not cause you to misjudge our
products.
Thanks for bringing this matter to our attention. Information received
from customers enables better evaluation of dealers' sales activities.
Your complaint will be retained in the dealer's file.
Thank you again for your email.
Sincerely,
Chris

As you can see, they are really concerned about my situation. Can you also see that they dont give a damn about what their dealers are telling people or how they are selling their cars? All they care about is getting the vehicles out the door, not the customer!

Message: I have the 7yr. 100k mile warranty myself. And it is fully transferrable... you know why? Cause I'm the second owner of the truck. The warranty transfers without any payment having to be made, so get your $50 back. And the truck will be warrantied no matter who owns it, so long as the odometer is correct. Take them to court if they don't cough up. And don't bother with trying to transfer its not necessary, the warranty is linked to the VIN not the owner on record. Raise hell, and keep the Dakota because you are 100% correct on this issue. If you need any help on this matter I will provide you with all the info I have.

Message: Hmm, was this 7yr/100k coverage back in 1995, or just in the more recent years? I ask because I bought my '95 used with only 50k on it, but as soon as it got off the lot I voided the warranty to hell with my minor mods. Just curious as the truck now has over 106k on it, but I've not had a problem with it aside from a mount on my right-front caliper going bad with age. Aside from that the truck ownz.

Message: Hmmm, Mark I hope everything works out for you and you calm down a bit. I know you were angered by this dealership's unethical behavior but, posting your personal telephone number on the internet is an unwise decision. Making clearly thought out, rational decisions usually works in your best interest. Good luck.

Message: I bought my truck back in the early summer of 2002. At the time they had just offered the first of the big rebates and huge warranties. I managed to score the 100k 7 yr and $2500 cash back. A family member bought the truck on my behalf to take advantage of a employee discount and then signed the truck off to me soon after. So unfortuneatly I don't have a A title anymore, but I still got my discount. I talked to a guy at the local dealership near me and he gave me some advice on the topic. Basically their service dept. computers have the warranty information offered on each vehicle sold. Simply take your truck in for a oil change and ask if you have the 100k or 70k warranty on it, claim you forgot or something, never mention that you are the second owner. They will tell you if the warranty is still good or applicable and simply take it in for service there from now on. All warrantys on automobiles, especially powertrain warrantys are valid no matter who owns the auto.

Message: I work at a chryler dealer and have been told by chrysler and all of our upper management that the 7/100,000 mile warranty that you get automatically when you buy the new vehicle is NOT transferrable. Only the later Powertrain Pledge 7/70,000 mile warrantys are transferrable for $50. Chrysler Service Contracts are totally transferrable because the customer that bought the vehicle had to big $$ to buy it. Originally the 7/100 plan was just a sales deal until chrysler decided to make it standard but they lowered the mileage to 70,000. I may be wrong so talk to another dealer. By the way ALL automobile dealerships are independant and are not controlled by the vehicle's manufacturer. They are assigned certain merits for following manufacturer's guidlines (chrysler FIVE STAR, GMs GOODWRENCH ect)which entitle them and their customers to certain deals others do not get, but they are still independant and it is up to the managers on how that particular business runs. The vehicle's quality or maker should not be in question.

Message: Double checked my paperwork the other day and sure enough.... its NOT transferrable. Fine print will get you every time! The dealership doesn't seem to care so I won't tell them I'm not the original owner, they haven't asked yet. Besides, given the service track record of most dakotas 97 and up, they should offer that 100k to everyone regardless.
