According to my temp gauge the engine barley gets warm. I still get heat from the heater, but the gauge only goes to the very front of the normal zone (barely). Seems to depend on outside temp as to if it even goes that far. Do you think the thermostat is stuck wide open or is the gauge malfunctioning? This truck is new to me so I don't have any other source of reference.

Factory gauges are notoriously inaccurate. After a short drive iin moderate weather, the engine should be fully warmed. With the engine running, feel the radiator and hoses. If they are hot, everything's fine. Usually, if you're getting good heater function, it's fine. Dodge heaters seem to be nuclear powered.

To be positive, remove the radiator cap when cold. Then let the engine warm up. Stick a cooking thermometer in there and see what the water temp is. Should be 190-200*'ish.

My '91 5.2 reads at the low end of the normal range also. I changed the thermostat and it made no difference. If it doesn't give you any problems I wouldn't worry about it.

If you hooked up 5 different temp guages, they would show 5 different readings. If you bought the truck from an individual, call him and ask him where the "normal" range is. Where the needle is on the guage is irrelivent as long as it does not deviate greatly from that spot.

Oh, I forgot to add that if you are really worried about it, just add an under dash temp guage. They're easy to hook up and only cost about $20. It will show you the actual temp (more or less), so that may give you more peace of mind.

This maybe too much for you, but if it really bothers you like it does me then here is the fix.....

Go buy a new sending unit. They are about $5.00.
Fire up the Coleman stove and boil you some water. Take the new sending unit, hook up the single wire from your harness and drop it in the pan. Do not let the sending unit touch the pan. It must stay suspended in the water. You might need someone to help you with that. Go turn the ignition key to the run/on position and watch the gauge. Just when the water starts to boil (212 degrees)the temp gauge should be a little past straight up (leaning to the right slightly). If it is not, remove the dash panel, pull the needle off, and stick it back on in the right position. That's what I did to mine. My temp gauge was 30 degrees off.

I forgot to mention the ground wire. You need 4 aligator clips and some extra wire so you can ground the case of the sending unit to the chasis and hook the wire form the harness to the terminal of the sending unit.

Very LOUD!! A friend of mine has a 95. He installed a dual-in/dual-out cat, headers, removed the muffler, added an X-pipe w/O2 sensor, and had true duals running out the back with 4" tapered mega phones angled out the back. That thing was loud as hell and it picked him up another 15hp. He now has a powerdyne S/C, R/T cam, Mopar PCM. It's REAL LOUD now!
