Subject: stock exhaust stainless? IP: Logged
Message: I am really curious, is my stock exhaust on my 2003 quad cab really stainless? Looks like I see rust on it. Also, can i just knock off the stock muffler and put ina turbo or something that sounds better?

Message: Your stock exhaust system is made out of aluminized 409 stainless. It is a low grade stainless often called 'muffler stainless' since it is really only used for exhaust systems. Technically it is not a true stainless steel since it doesn't have quite enough nickel I believe, but it is a far cry better than the old cold rolled steel. 409 will rust but lasts much longer than what they used to use. This is why places like Midas started doing brakes etc. When the switch was made to 409, people only needed to replace the exhaust 1/4 as often and Midas needed something to fill the void.

Message: All Dakotas made from 1993 on have stainless exhaust. Years ahead of the competition. At that time, the only other manufacturers using stailness exhaust were the imports. Chevy and Ford finally swithced to stainless just a few years ago.

Message: I had a 1985 Dodge Mini Ram Van with stainless exhaust. Chrysler was a world leader in its use. A BMW salesman at the dealer I did some work for in the late 1980's told me the Bimmers "Now had stainless exhaust!". When I told him so did my Dodge van, he said, "Dodge???" and walked away.
