Subject: Water pump leak? IP: Logged
Message: My cousin who is owns a Midas Muffler place took a look at my 93, 318, Dakota for a coolant leak and said that he thinks it is leaking from the timing chain housing that is behind the water pump. He said he presure tested the collant system to 15lbs and no leaks developed but when I drive it I get a very bad leak. I have to refil the radiator daily with at least a gallon.
Does anyone know what the problem is? Is this timing chain housing leak a possibility or not? If so what is involved in the repair, costs or can I do it by myself. I am fairly capable doing my own repairs when it comes to replacing parts. I have done water pump replacements before but not on this truck.

Message: As you know, there isn't water IN the timing chain housing, so you have to look for the leak to be coming from the water pump (probable) or from behind the housing, as in water jacket leak (improbable). I would guess that you have a packing leak or gasket leak from the water pump.
Water flows when you drive uphill as it were, so you might even have a bad hose, and the movement of air, from driving (and fan) cause it to collect on the timing chain cover.
anyway these are things I would look at first. as you are losing so much coolant you have a LARGE leak.

Message: Would this be something that might not show up when the system was pressure tested? My cousin said he got 15lbs of pressure and no leaks developed. How is that possible? Is it possible for a leak to be evident only when the truck is running?
I didn't think there was any coolant in the timing chain either. Thanks for the info in any case.

Message: Its possible that a leak wouldn't show up under a pressure test. The fact is that when you are driving, there is a lot of HEAT introduced to the coolant, as well as pressure increases. I know that your rad cap is probably set for 15lb, but you never know what effects heat might have on a lose hose, or pin hole, etc... I would realy look the system over very closely, tighten hose clamps, wiggle the fan,up and down, side to side to see if your water pump bearings are wearing. ( it should be solid, not wiggle)
My GUESS, is that if it isn't your radiator, or hoses, then it could very well be your water pump.
hope this helps... let me know
