Message: I am looking at a 1998 Dodge Dakota Sport with a 5.2 and only 73 000 kms which seems really low but they only want $16000 so menh. I was wondering if anybody had any concerns with the 98's and problems to look out for. Also for some reason there is silicone around the back window as if it were replaced and there is epoxy holding on the weather stripping over the top of the passenger side door.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. One more thing, what is the gas milage on the 5.2 compared to the newer 4.7 or 3.9.
Thnx

Message: I would say that is way too much for a 1998 Sport,
I bought in January a 2002 Dakota CC.SLT,4.7L,AUTO,PW,PL,CD,2 tone paint, and Fact. bedliner with 29,000 miles and paid $15,200. I traded in a 1997 Dakota Sport 5.2,auto with 81,000 miles and got almost $4000.00, Kelly blue Book retail value was $5300.00, so that wasn't too bad. I think you can do alot better, check around.

Message: Check out Kelly Blue Book link below:
http://www.kbb.com/
It will give you a ball park figure on what to pay!
Also, the gas milage is about the same between
the 5.2l and the 4.7L, Getting around 17.1 mpg.
Hopes this helps

Message: That's way too much for that truck ! Gas milage for 5.2 shouldn't be much worse than a 4.7.
Skip the 3.9 unless you're a flatlander who doesn't care about acceleration and get a heck of a deal on it.

Message: Hey Nate, even if you are Canadian then I think you are getting
hosed. Just bought my '98 Sport/4x4/5.2l/club in really good
condition with 126k for $11000 CDN. It was a good deal, but I
looked at others too and had no trouble coming in under my
$13500 limit. There is a 2000 Quad Cab/4x4/v6 on a local lot
for $16,900 if that tells you anything.
Mileage is brutal, but Civics don't carry dirtbikes too well....
Happy hunting!

Message: My dad has a '98 4x4 CC with the 5.2L. He gets about 14mpg highway, and less in the city. It ***DOES*** suffer from the crappy ball-joint plague. Another downside is the new air-intake design. Due to limited room in the Gen3 engine-compartment, they changed the air-intake design. I don't know if you can find an open-element air-filter housing for it like you can for mine. That thing REALLY added some horses and mileage. I guess you could always go old-school and get one that sticks up through the hood though.

Message: That's way too much for a 98 5.2L. I only paid $15,000.00 for my 2000R/T with 10,000 miles on it in 2003. I thought that was too much. I could have bought a 2001 with 18,000 miles a few months later for $14,900.00. Both are CC's.
But, don't listen to these 4.7L owners bad mouthing the Magnum engines. I've owned all 4 engines (3.9L, 4.7L, 5.2L, and 5.9L) and the best one for fuel mileage is the 5.3L. My 94 would hit 21mpg on a regular basis driving 70mph on I40 between Flagstaff and Oklahoma City.

Message: Hey Wiplash, did you put a Chevy motor in your truck(5.3)LOL. Seriously though, these guys are right. That seems high. Here are some tips to get a good deal.
1. Do all your research up front. Kelley and NADA are good sources, but Edmunds is my personal favorite. Don't be afraid to print and take material into the negotiations. This will show them that you're not an easy mark.
1. Don't get used to looking at the dealer retail prices on Kelley, Edmunds, etc. The dealer didn't pay anything near that amount. Start your offer at the trade-in value and make them move you up from there. Don't allow them more than 10% over this amount.
2. Get preapproved online at Capital One Auto or Eloan before going to the dealer. Tell the dealer that you will finance through them, though. They are more willing to deal on price if they think they can make it up in financing. Only after you have agreed on price do you mention the rate you got online. Tell them that if they can match it, you will finance with them. Follow through on your word if you can. You are not obligated to the online financers if the check never clears, so have nothing to lose.
3. Don't let them ask you what monthly payment you want. They can keep you in the range, no matter how much they are ripping you off. Tell them instead that monthly payment is irrelivant(you've already done your research, so you know what your payment will be) and that your prefer to negotiate on price only.
4. If you have a trade-in. Don't let them combine that into the deal either. Politely tell them that you will ONLY deal with one transaction at a time. If they give you a good deal on the purchase, but you're not happy on the trade. Just sell it yourself. It's a bit more of a hassle, but you'll make more doing it that way. I sold my last vehicle in 4 days on Autotrader.com.
5. Don't cave in to them, make them cave in to you. Remember, he needs the sale more than you need the car. If you have to walk away and give them your phone number and tell them to call you if they can match your request. This gives him 24 hours to regroup and come at you from a different angle, so don't give in. Resist the temptation to call them. If you do, you lose, they know they have you. If they won't deal, just remember, there's another one just like it right around the corner. Good Luck!
