Subject: Bad tie rod ends

Message:
I have a 2000 Quad cab Dakota, 51K miles. For the last 5K miles or so the upper ball joints and inner tie rod ends have been going bad. I thought this was really pitiful considering the mileage. I called the dealer and talked to the service manager who told me that the front ends of the dakota were junk and that ford was much better. Remember, these are the people who SOLD me the truck and theyre saying its junk. The other part that pisses me off is that i cant buy the inner tie rod ends without buying the whole rack, which is about 500 bucks. Then $300 in labor. Its too bad to even drive the truck. Can anyone give me advice about getting the tie rod ends cheaper? Does anyone else have this problem? Who should i contact to raise hell?

But what did you replace? The upper ball joints are going to be recalled but the inner tie rod ends are the big problem. I can only buy them from Chrysler and I have to buy the whole rack, which is about $500 bucks. If you know where i can get the inner tie rod ends by themselves let me know.
Thanks for the reply midnightmagic

The Gen III Daks (1997-1999) use the recirculating ball steering system, while the 2000 and up use rack and pinion. With the rack and pinion system, the entire rack needs to be changed out, while with the recirculating ball system, the individual rod ends can be done. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there was an old post about this somewhere that would answer your questions.

Ive spoke with Chrysler and the dealer again and they said they will pay for parts and i can pay for labor so im ok with that. But what about in the future(50K miles or so)when it comes up again? They wont continue to pay for this i know but can i somehow switch to the recirculating ball?

it is easy to change the tie rod ends on my 2000, does not require the replacement of rack.

Gabe, thank you. I went to the Federal Mogul site and found the Moog part. Im going to call tomorrow to make sure its the right thing. If it is il be very happy because this is bound to happen again in the future and theres no way Chrysler will pay again.
