At least you guys can go that high. Dam 5.2s only turn 4400RPM LOL (unless you have a Superchips, Hypertech or a custom flash AND a manual transmission). Seems really kind of "Oldschool" to me but it works just fine. Just has a short power band. Sure wouldn't mind having the extra 1000RPM sometimes. Anyone ever try to reach 5500 rpm with a auto and re-programmed ECU? I guess you could shift it manually and go that high.

my 2000 4.7L dakota bucked out at 117mph several times. it goes no faster than that. I'd like to return it to the dealer.

Either something is wrong with your engine or your tach is out of calibration. I've owned 3 5.2L magnums and all 3 rev-limited at around 5200rpm. The Mopar Performance PCM raises the red line to 5500rpm. It's probably your tach. The tachs and the speedometers on the Dakotas are off most of the time by as much as 500rpm and 10mph. My 2000r/t was off by 9mph and 400rpm @ 70mph.

That is the top speed limit for the Dakota. It's been that way since 1991. You either have to have your PCM flashed or get a Mopar Performance PCM to change the 117mph speed limiter. I think the MP performance PCM only raises the top end to 125mph.

I must be lucky.
BTW, my rev limiter appearsl to be around 5800 to 6000 RPM's. I'd like there to be a flash for thr 2003. I bet I could run this pig to 6500 easy after the cam swap I'll be doing and with my ported TB, ect.

I'm not sure but I thought I read somewhere that the 4.7's shut off was 6200 rpm. I ran mine to 5800-6000rpm a couple of times and it never shut off. The 4.7L has a much lighter reciprocating assembly. It should me able to handle the R's with no problem as long as detonation doesn't occur. A larger cam would help reduce the chance of detonation.

the 5.2 has a 4750 rpm redline, and a 5250 cut off. Your truck should shut down at 114 (chrysler says so) so your speedo is probably off too.

The Mopar Performance Technician told me the shut down on my 94 was 117mph and that is exactly where it shut down. The pre-OBD2 models like the 95's and older Daks would go as fast as 120mph as long as you turned the OD off. At 120mph the engine reached the shut down RPM of around 5200. That was with 3.55 gears and the auto. With the Mopar Performance PCM you got an extra 300rpm and you could almost hit 125mph. Just one more reason the Gen1 and Gen2's were better.

First time I floored it I was surprised... the automatic let my 4.7 rev to over 5800 and it still no signs of slowing down, I only let off cause I didnt want to blow up my brand new truck.

Well, I have never seen the top-speed of my truck. I might have gone 95-100mph once (in a hurry to catch a ferry). I have a sports car for going fast. I typically drive barely over the speed limit on the highway to keep the mpg up on this pig.
Wiplash: The tach on my truck says that 4400RPM is Red-line. I don't know how else to read it. All of the marks are red past that point on the tach. Mine is an Automatic. Therefore it never exceeds 4400RPM. I haven't tried to manually shift it. That's why I asked if anyone tried go past 4400RPM with an auto on a vehicle with a re-programmed ECU. I don't know where the fuel cutoff or rev limiter is, because I have never manually shifted my automatic.

Well, Ramdakota, you asked if anyone had tried to get 5500rpm out of a 5.2L with a programmed PCM. The answer is yes. I've done it on 3 different 5.2L Daks with the Mopar Performance PCM. It raises the rev limit to 5500.

Is anybody elses stock 4.7 Dakota governed at just 100mph? I was really dissapointed when it was flying up to 100 in a hurry then it shuts down. I was looking forward to at least pegging it out.

yes. the gen III's speed limiter is set to 100mph. i have
heard there are flashes and ECU upgrades that will
raise it. there is deffinetly enough power to go way past
100mph it's just the fuel cut off.

Not all Gen 3s have that low a limit - usually just some of the ones with longer driveshafts I think.
