Message: My 2002 4.7 easily hit the 112~117mph mark. I tried turning the OD off to see if it would go faster like the Gen2's would and it wouldn't. On the Gen2's you can turn the OD off and it will go all the way to the shut rpm shut down around 5200 which is about 120mph. The 1996 Gen2's probably won't do that, but the 95's and older Daks will.

Message: My 93 Dak has the Mopar PCM and it shuts down at 5500rpm. I've been clocked at 124mph (thrown in jail). I don't know about the gen3's but my gen2 will go as fast as the rev limiter will let you go with the OD turned off. At just under 5500rpm I'm cruising at over 120mph! I doubt any gen3 can hang with me.

And no it was not on the rev limiter or speed limiter, I know your 2nd Gen 1993 Lead Sled can not keep up with my 3rd Gen Club Cab

Message: I have a 99 XCab 5.2L SLT. My tach will only rev to 3750 Rpm's before the tranny shifts it's self. Could that be a sign of the "death flash" that I heard about? I bought this truck about 6 months ago used.
Oh and it gets terrible gas milege also like only 14.5 to 15 mpg on average. (maybe has something to do with death flash I dont know)
Thanks

Message: What rpm does your tach read at 60mph? It should be around 1644rpm with those large 30" diameter tires. Are you sure you have 255/75/15's? I would not second guess you, but those are rather large tires for a stock non-4wd dakota. Most 4wd Dakotas don't run tires larger than 30-32" tall without clearance problems.

Message: ZoSoAir,
Man something is way out of adjustment/wack. You should be turning 1700rpm at 60mph with the automatic/3.55's/255-70-15. There is way too much variation going on here to make a proper diagnosis online. Your tach calculates to be off by 350rpm on the low side. To confirm this you need to clock your speed at 60mph between the mile markers to verify that your speedometer is correct. You should hit each mile marker at 60sec intervals (give or take 1-2sec for mile marker placement)
The problem with my conclusion of your tach being off is that that means you are shifting at 3400rpm (3750-350rpm error) instead of 3750. That would also suggest that you have a problem with the transmission (not necassarily internal).
There is a cable on the passenger side of the throttle body that runs down behind the engine and to the transmission. That cable connects to the kick-down lever. It and the PCM control the shift points. If that cable has broke or come loose then you would shift way early like you are describing. If it's not broke or disconnected, it maybe out of adjustment. There is a white plastic clip that is immediately behind the metal bracket on the intake manifold that it attaches to. This clip is what holds the cable adjustment in place. The clip just snaps in. Pull the clip out and pull the cable hose back towards the firewall about 1/4" and reinstall the clip. Test drive and see if your shift points change. The shift points should go up the further you pull the cable back (remove slack). You can only go so far with this adjustment obviously. If that doesn't fix it then you probably ought to see a transmission specialist.
Sorry for not beeing more help. It's nice to be able to help people, but I'm afraid this one has gone beyond what I can offer.
