Have you found a way to reduce muffler resonance in the cab that works well?

I just installed a DynoMax SuperTurbo 17710 in my 2004 QC and am getting BAD resonance in the cab between 1600 - 1900 RPM... right in the range for freeway cruising. Other than the resonance problem, I really like the sound of the muffler. But, the resonance is so bad it could give you headaches in a couple of hours.... I've emailed their Tech Support about this problem, and am waiting on a response....

Just in case, I've tried researching on this and other boards for methods of reducing resonance, but have found very little information. A couple people mentioned putting an additional resonator before the muffler which had some success but didn't totally eliminated it. Another couple mentioned putting a longer tip on the tailpipe. The typical answer is to replace the muffler.... But, how can you be assured that the new performance muffler won't do the same thing?

Has anyone found something that works well to reduce resonance?

Just wanted to follow-up. After trading emails and a couple of phone calls to Dynomax, they're replacing the 17710 that I installed with the 17698, at no cost to me -- including the cost of installation.

All this is under their "Safe and Sound" 90-day satisfaction guaranteed warranty (in addition to the lifetime warranty on the muffler). The local NAPA had to order in the 17698, so I won't be able to get it installed for a couple of days.

Using the 17698, I'll have to use 2.5" > 3" adapters before and after the muffler.... This is the same muffler that they use in their catback system that they've tested on the 2003 Quads, where they use a 3" tailpipe. I'm not replacing the tailpipe, though... They feel pretty confident that this will solve the problem.

Their Tech Support and Warranty folks have been great to deal with, so far! I'll report back!

Meanwhile -- DO NOT use the 17710 on the QuadCabs -- the resonance is terrible!!!!!

Final report -- Installed the larger muffler this morning, along with a new stainless dual tip. My preliminary reaction is that it seems to have solved the problem, decreasing both the volume of the resonance, and moving it up the RPM scale.

Instead of resonating loudly at 1600 - 1800 RPM, now there's only a mild drone at slightly over 2000 RPM. This drone is a fraction of what I was hearing before, and since it occurs at a higher RPM, I don't think it's going to be a problem... 2000+ RPM with my 3.55 gears and 265X16 tires is over 80 MPH in OD.. I doubt I've be on cruise control at those speeds very much, and even so, the wind noise will likely be louder than this drone....

The larger muffler with 3" internal pipes seems noticeably quieter than the other one, but it isn't "broken in" yet, and will likely get a bit louder. I think I've going to be quite pleased with the sound of it... under acceleration, it reminds me of the old 383/440 Roadrunners or Chargers....

Note that both the mufflers I've tried were round, welded SuperTurbos from their larger triflow design -- their quietest SuperTurbo mufflers. This larger one is actually recommended for some RV applications.... Both have nice quiet rumble at idle and are fairly quiet at the higher RPMs -- yet have a deep, powerful roar during acceleration.

The "Safe and Sound" warranty worked like a champ -- and made me a happy customer!

I used the stock 2.5 inch pipes that came with the truck 04 CC 4wd 4.7. They put on a magna flow with a stainless tip. Sounds great, deep sound no cab noise.

I'm glad my Dak has a Flowmaster 70 22" muffler. No cab resonance at all and excellent performance. 2001 RC 4.7 5-spd 3:92; Flowmaster 70 cat-back with 2 1/2" duals.
