I have a 97 dakota 5.2/318 4x4 with 390 gears.....Something under the truck is making a poping noise, this happens when i'm on the gas and then let up, it pops, and then again when i jump on the gas. When i come to a stop it pops and then again when i move. It also does it when i hit large bumps. BUT it does NOT do it every time i drive it. I'm very confused here. I have checked all the universal joints, have checked the ball joints, Everything seems tight to me..but i'm not a professional mechanic. The only thing i think it could be is the tie rod ends, how do you know if those are bad?

Sounds like a bad motor mount or transmision mount. Happened to my wife's taurus. Firsttime the mount was damaged and second time the screw had backed itself out and would do the same exact thing you described.
