Subject: Need Help on buying a 00 quad 4x4 w/5.9L IP: Logged
Message: I need some help. I used to own a 97 dodge dakota and have been wanting one again ever since I sold it. I am test driving a 00 quad cab 4x4 5.9L V-8. The truck has 80,000 miles on it and I was wandering if anyone has one with that many miles on it. I have read about gas mileage and I estimated I get 15mpg on the turnpike. Am i way off? And could anyone give me some advice on what to look out for as far as problems with this truck and engine. The asking price is 14,900 which is under retail...is that good?? One last thing I wouldn't be hauling anything so most of you will say I don't need the power but I just like it. Does any one else feel the same??? Please respond because I have to either buy it or take it back on monday....thanks

Message: I have a 00' quad cab 4x4 5.9L V-8 with 48K miles on it....Mileage is about 12-14 City 15-17 Highway. I So far have had no problems or issues with the truck. No ball joint issues or warping brakes. I do live in the Desert where the weather mostly warm. (This may contribute to the condition of the truck in a positive way.) The power of the 5.9 is great. I love the way it torques up the mountain grades. If the MPG is acceptable to you I would jump at that truck for the price. Heck If you don't get I might!!

Message: Don't worry about the engine too much. As long as it has had decent maint, it will run pretty much forever. I watched my father beat the crap out of Dodge truck for years in the construction industy, and the engine was never a problem.
The transmission, OTOH, was a different story. He went through a lot of those. So have the transmission and suspension checked closely by a reliable mechanic; pay whatever it costs for this.

Message: I have a 03 with all of the above and a 3.92 rear. It torques up everything without coming out of OD. However, it occasionally makes this vibrating sound in OD going up these hills, let off a little and the noise stops. I don't know if it is OD or the torque converter or what. It only has 12,000 miles on it but I don't want the dealership messing with it until we (dealership and me) know exactly what it is.
