Message: It is normal for the pressure to fluctuate while driving. For my truck, the oil pressure at idle is around 30-40 but it depends on what type of oil you are using and reads about 50-60 under throttle. If the gauge dropped all the way down to 0, then that is a problem.

Message: 25-50# oil pressure is OK, 25 at idle and 50 cruising is no problem. If the oil pressure dropped to 0 (or low 0-10 psi) and the engine started knocking/ratteling you better have the engine looked at. I have heard that some of these engines can get sludged up and then the oil pump pickup screen gets clogged with the sludge debris. If the engine is run with low or no oil pressure it's going to ruin the engine, scuffed cylinders, galled bearings.
Sludge can come from using cheap or conventional oil and not doing the 3K oil change. Running synthetic oil can help prevent sludge, but if it's sludged it's too late for the synthetic. Best thing to do if your loosing oil pressure is to take it to a mechanic and have them check it for sludge deposits and a clogged oil pump pickup screen. They can flush the engine and get the oil pressure back to normal.

Message: You can flush an engine yourself MUCH cheaper. Ever see that crap 'Gunk Motor Flush' that comes in a small metallic can? It's kerosene! Simply drain your oil, fill up with kerosene and run the engine for a few minutes, watching the temp CLOSELY. When it gets about half-temp or after five minutes, drain the kerosene. It should come out piss-black, possibly with clumps of debris. After it stops draining, remove your oil-filter. Now remove the wire from your coil so you cannot start the engine, and turn it over a few times to make sure ALL the kerosene has been pumped out. After that, put on your new filter and new oil.
I do this every five changes, and it does NOT harm your engine. I actually learned this from a Benz mechanic who told me how they flush engines when I was curious to know if I could do it. Just don't run it more than five min or too hot.

Message: I'm no expert by any means but I wouldn't recommend anyone drain their oil and run only kerosene in the crankcase even for only a few minutes. Adding a small amount of kerosene to the existing oil for cleaning would be okay.

Message: Seriously, kj. I've been doing this in the '92 V6 since it had a hair over 50k on it, and it now has over 127k on it, with NO problems. I've done it to my friend's Honda, another friend's REAL Jaguar (1987 Vander Plas, before Ford took them over in '88), and numerous others including my father's '98 Dak. I've also always done it on the '95 and it runs as good as the day I bought it! Like I said, if you don't let the engine warm up and you don't let the thing run for more than five min TOPS, you're fine. I generally run mine for about three minutes. And once again, I only do this every fifth change, and would NEVER recomend it every single change.

Message: Take the oil pan off and change the oil pump. You want a truck you can trust. Sending unit could plug up, but can you take that chance. You may be far from home when it quits again and have to run it till it quits to get back to civilization. You'll be dollars ahead if you change now. Good luck.

Message: I have to agree im not running straight kerosine if anything i would drain a quart or oil, refill with kerosine and run it like that for a few min. Most likely the same results without the risks. Also you can buy a can of cleaner for about 7 bucks that you just pour in... its probably similar or the same thing as straight kerosine but for 7 bucks its not that big of a savings to take a risk.

Message: I just went thru this with a used 2001 QC 4.7L...oil pressure dropped to ZERO four times since Jan. 10, 2004 when I bought it! Had to have it towed a couple times.
There is NO SHORT CUT here. Pull the pan, clean the sludge out and clean or replace the pickup screen. That's your problem!

Message: If you put a high-volumn pump in you may want a larger cap. oil pan, in extream conditions you may not have enough oil in the pan at all times.

Message: I've had this same problem twice. Both times I pulled the pan and there was no sludge. I replaced the oil pump and the problem went away. I did dissasemble on of the pumps on my 92 5.2L and found that the plunger in the oil pressure relief valve was scared and it was sticking. I believe this is what most people are experiencing. Go buy a quality Melling oil pump.

Message: do not EVER run ONLY kerosene in an engine......
jeez.... and you did it in a JAG......just think about this for a second the engine bearings rely completly on a couple thousands of a inch of OIL for lubrication..... now doing this will not wrek your engine quickly but it will definatly take a few thousand miles off its life time
have you ever heard of how hard it is on an engine every time you start it after it sits a day or better. this is because your bearings are running on only what oil sticks from the last run until the pump gets oil flowing again
obvious shade tree mechanic.......
if a high volume oil pump is going to be used (and by all means use one) the pan will not need to be larger cuz tha oil isnt going anywhere but back to the pan it will just happen faster, worst case make sure the oil level is closer to the top mark than the bottom on the dip stick
good luck
and alwayz get a few opinions before trying what sephiroth says

Message: I have a 96 Dodge Dakota 4x4 Club cab and i have a problem with the oil in my truck as well. It started 3 years ago, the oil gage on the dash would just drop to zero but no ticking or knocking. We would change the oil and have no problem again till it was time to change the oil.Well the other day the oil gauge dropped and it had just had the oil changed less then two months ago, i drive locally so i don't have a lot of miles on this oil change. It not only dropped this time but i had that ticking noise, put oil in but now the gauge isn't even moving. the truck must be getting oil presure or i would hear knocking and ticking and i don't hear that. I am the only owner of this vehicle and it was bought new, but i have had nothing but problems with this truck since day one! Any suggestions?

Message: I currently have a similar problem as peconec. In my 2000 R/T about 30 sec to a min after I take into high rpms and back down the oil preassure gauge drops to zero for a second then immediatley goes back up. I don't hear knocking or anything. This problem only started about a week ago but seems to be getting more frequent.

Message: If your pressure flucksuates from very low to standing pressure only, but never redlines or goes down to 0 and stands, it is usually the sensor. If the pressure redlines, it is definitely sludge in the pickup screen and or pump. You will also here slight knocking in the lifters due to oil not being pumped up to the top of the engine. Its best when you drop the pan to clean the pump screen, to automatically change the pump while you have the pan off. Happy Motoring. Remember all Dodge Boys where white hats!
