Message: The fastest GenII Daks were the 1992 and 1993 RC 5.2 Automatics. They had the largest exhaust manifolds and slightly warmer cam. I recall a road test of a '94 5.2 with 5-speed and 3:92 that was a full second slower in the 1/4 mile than the former trucks. Some of that was the engine, but the main problem was it would not hook up. GenII's were 300 pounds lighter than the current GenIII's. I bet that '94 would be killer with traction bars and slicks, however.

Message: Depends what you're looking for in a truck. 1/4 mile times, midrange flexibility, or top end. I have a 4.7L 5 speed, and for an everyday driver, I haven't driven a better engine package. The midrange is very controllable, and you can hang on to 2nd or 3rd without the tranny kicking up a gear. the 4.7 seems to be an under rated engine, but I'm not sure if there is any weight savings over the 5.2 or R/T.

down the road with it.

Message: RadioMan,
Now, I know I praised the manual tranny, but a word of warning here. I bought my 4.7L 5-speed Dak NEW in 2000, and used it as transportation 15-18 miles to work. Used it to transport 1 400-lb. motorcycle occasionally to the mechanic. No holeshots, no upper-end burnouts at 7500 rpm, etc. Last September, the tranny locked in 4th gear, no warning. The shift rail went, and the forks went with it.
I love the combination, but the moral to the story is keep it under warranty. Since mine was a 2000 (with a 3-year, 36,000 coverage), I was SOL, and ate the $2500 bill. Nuff said.

Message: I had a '92 5.2 RC 3:55 auto that got 7.6 sec 0-60 when stock. Mopar Action magazine's '93 RC 5.2 3:92 with K&N drop-in and Mopar Perf. PCM ran 14.4 1/4 mi., 14.9 stock. Owners of 4.7 5-spd 3:92's have reported 6.5 second-range 0-60.
