Subject: guages IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 96 dakota, V8. Both the fuel guage, & the oil pressure guage are inop. I have driven approx. 800 miles since buying the truck, so I know I have oil pressure. Called the local dealer, & was told that, if both guages don't work, probably had a bad instrument cluster. I replaced the entire instrument cluster, & no change. I guess I'll try replacing the oil pressure switch next. I was told that the same ground wire is used for both guages. I can live with the fuel guage not working, but the oil pressure makes me nervous.
Any ideas?

Message: Check the obvious...fuses, relays and such. Another option...junkyard for new gauges...relativly inexpensive fix. Make sure the Odometer matches though

Message: Thanks, I've already done all that. No change. I was just wondering if the two guages have a common ground. I checked, & the oil pressure switch is pretty cheap, & easy to replace, so I'm going to try replacing it, then I'll know what to do about the gas guage. I caused the tach to stop working, when I tried to disconnect the oil pressure sending unit.
I was told that, if the oil pressure switch isn't working, the computer won't allow the motor to start, so I didn't think it could be bad.
