Message: My new 2004 QC 4X4 now has about 800 miles on it. I'm getting 14.9xx pretty consistently right now. I'm hoping for 16+ in the summer.
Plus, I'm going to put a Magnaflow muffler on it that might help it breathe a tiny bit better...

Message: Jeez, that's good for a 4.7 no mods. I run a '95 4x4 CC 5.2L and get about 17-18mpg summer and 13-14mpg winter. That's with a K&N air-filter, AMSOIL (10W-30), Tornado Air (adds torque), Bosch Platinum 4 plugs, full-flow K&N synthetic oil-filter, and stock 3:55 differentials. I do about 50% highway and 50% city driving. Wish I did all highway!

| Amsoil Fuel Economy - Gas Mileage - MPG IP: Logged
Message:
Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge. Once again, it has been proven by AMSOIL INC. through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations and as witnessed by most of our customers, that switching to synthetic oils and lubricants can (and does) improve fuel economy (mpg).
If you fill up at a warmer part of the day one week compared to the previous week you can sometimes see a huge fluctuation in MPG just based on that.
Also, the pump may have stopped pumping sooner this week compared to last, making it "seem" like you used less (or more) gallons of fuel.
Also, you did not mention what oil viscosity that you are currently using. Depending upon your driving habits, conditions, and climate ... switching viscosities can improve fuel economy also. I've observed a MPG increase when switching grades (using a 5w-30 compared to 10w-40).
In conclusion, switching to synthetics (in most cases) does lead to an increase in MPG.

Message: 04 Quad v8 4.7/4wd.
about a 15 minute mostly highway drive to work and 25 minute all highway drives to my parents' house on the weekends. It started at about 11 mixed in the dead of winter, then as it got warmer out and the truck was broken in more it rose to mid 12s, then mid 13s, and recently a couple tanks of over 14. Ive had a couple almost all highway trips with light accelaration net me 16 or thereabouts. I am just now turning 7k and had 8 miles on the truck when I bought it in October just before it got really cold out.

Message: I have seen a number of people on this site saying the same about thing about mileage. I have a 2001 QC with the 4.7, a drop in K&N, and a bed cover. I have never, on a long trip (2 more than 1,000 miles, and three more than 5,000 miles), gotten less than 17 going the "mountains" of Pennsylvania at 72-75 mph. I am thinking about adding new performance exhaust, but it sounds like guys that have these mods get worse mileage than me. I guess is it all worth it?

Message: I think there's several variables at work here:
1. Type of driving (freeway, highway, city, etc.) and the speeds involved. I'd think that's the descending order of MPG.
2. Whether the truck is 2WD, 4WD or AWD -- I'd think that's also the descending order of MPG.
3. Whether it's a manual transmission, 5 speed auto, or 4 speed auto -- also in descending order of MPG.
4. Driving style, terrain (flat, hills, mountains, etc.)....
I've just ordered a Magnaflow muffler (not full cat-back) and a drop-in K&N for mine. I'm anxious to see how that impacts my mileage. Most of my driving is to/from work, so that's a constant -- the variable is how heavy my right foot is... but so far that hasn't seemed to make a really significant difference.

Message: Just wanted to provide another update....
Just checked mileage for the 3rd full tank on my new 4.7 QC 4WD... 15.57 after running it considerably harder than before, and with maybe 20 miles of 4WD usage in the snow -- but I added a Tuff Tonneau III since the last fillup....
Just added a Dynomax 17710 muffler today, just before filling up. We'll see if that has any impact on mileage -- though not likely an objective test since I'll have my right foot in it listening to this V8...
Next addition is K&N drop-in, on order, but not here yet....
BTW, initial impression of the Dynomax is quite positive. Barely louder at idle, with a slight rumble, but a deep full-throated roar from 2,000 - 4,000. Just a touch of resonance between 1600-1800 RPM in second, but not noticeable at that RPM in 3rd or OD.
Note that the 17710 is their tri-flow (i.e. quietest line) with 2.5" in and out. Not as free-flowing as their straight-through designs, but I wanted it pretty quiet, and wanted to maintain low-end torque on a minimally-modded setup since I tow a trailer quite a bit. Though I expect some noise increase, I am hoping it doesn't get a whole lot louder than it currently is....
Even at 2.5" with the stock tailpipe, I can tell the difference in the way it breathes under acceleration.... Not a big difference, but noticeable -- and it sounds mean....
