Subject: 2004 QC Exhaust ??

After searching and reading extensively, I've decided to put a Magnaflow Super Turbo muffler on my new 4X4 QC, and leave the 2.5" pipes as is for low end torque....

I see where people have been using the Magnaflow 17698 on earlier model QCs, but I can't find anyone who's put one on a 2004... Is the exhaust the same on the 2004 as on the earlier trucks?

My local muffler shop called Magnaflow and they couldn't help. They're now using a smaller oval 5x8x18 muffler in all their cat-back systems for the Dakotas, and couldn't even confirm that that one would fit the 2004 model... Note that they're using this smaller muffler in all 2000-2003 Dakota cat-backs now, regardless of engine, cab or wheelbase....

I'd really like to use the larger, quieter muffler in my QuadCab, if possible...

Thanks!

Im looking for something very similar, flowmaster makes some great sounding mufflers what are fairly quiet and have great air flow (hushpowers), however they dont make a catback system for the 04' yet (03' might work.. anyone tried it?) so you have to get it welded in. let me know what you do, i think im tossing the 40 series on my 04' QC

Well I just went underneath the truck and did some measuring... The original muffler is round, with a 24" long body. So, I just ordered a Magnaflow 17710 which has an 18" body, 7" round, but is 24" long, with 2.5" in and out, offset. With a short piece of connector pipe, it should bolt right in. It is a smaller version of the 17698, which is 8-3/8" round, 3" in and out, but would've required adapters and perhaps welding. Both are the tri-flows, which means it should be pretty quiet, but the larger 17698 has 3" tubing inside so perhaps a little less restriction. I'm thinking the 17710 will probably be a little louder due to the smaller body, and may help keep the low-end torque up with it's more restrictive 2.5" size...

Also ordered a dual tip to go along with it....

Will post back with the results, once installed....

They don't recommend the rear-exit duals for towing because the exhaust fumes/smoke go directly on the trailer. They recommend a side-exit instead...

Some of the side-exit systems have dual pipes from the muffler out the side.

I tow a boat and a utility trailer also, so I'm not even going with the whole cat-back package -- I'm just replacing the muffler, keeping my 2.5" single pipe, and putting a dual tip on it... It seems some back pressure is desirable for low-end torque. So, I'm keeping the smaller, stock tailpipe, but going with the least-restrictive muffler.

IMO, these 4.7s are weak enough at low RPM already (compared to my old 5.2 Ram at least), and I didn't want to take a chance on losing any more low-end....

On additional note -- it seems some of the rear-exit dual setups also require removing your spare tire from under the truck, since the tailpipe barely clears the spare -- and you could set your spare on fire....
