I have a Dakota that dies when you don't want it to even as we are driving down the road with cruise control on,and for no apparent reason. It has been very sporatic and at various speeds. Some days it runs ok and others it dies several times a day.Coil has been changed, fuel pump, fuel filter battery, Spark plugs, Complete tune up and The Air intake gone over and cleaned by professionals.
Today I thought I had a bad ground wire from the Battery so I replaced it and after I started the truck and went to the fender to listen to the engine( about 10 seconds ) The engine died again.
We are at a huge loss as to what to do next and thought about the computer. This is a Dodge Dakota fuel injection system and 1992.
Any help would be appreciated.

Message: Bo, if it is usually starts right back up after it shuts off I would say it is the throttle position sensor. I had a 94 Dodge Dakota that did the same thing and that was at fault. You made no mention of whether it is hard to restart or not once it shuts off. If it hard to restart, I would look at the crankshaft position sensor.

Message: we've had that happen 3 times, once it was the hall effect (cam sensor), once it was the computer, and once it was the map sensor. It still goes through map sensors about every three months (says the map sensor voltage is too high, if anyone has any thoughts on this, that would be great). In each case it would be running fine, then start to cough sputter, and finally die. Sometimes it would start right back up, sometimes it wouldnt, but computers are expesive, so id check the other two first.
good luck

Message: Ok everyone has had great inputs and I really appreciate it.. I guess this is not a unique situation after reading several other engine stops problems. However it is unique in the fact it stops completely with no warning, dead, out a here, fini, capoot. No warning no nothing. It has created very serious situations as it has happened in the middle of an intersection several times, and boy is that ever frustaring getting honked at. The horns don't bother me it's those grills coming at you that could hurt. I will keep plugging along and probably will change the computer out next week. That is if I can make it to work. One more thing I forgot was, it does restart sometimes quickly and others it takes a few minutes. But so far it has restarted before the tow truck gets there.

Message: my suggestion would be to check the PCM. check for proper power and ground to your PCM. if you can get ahold of a service manual that would be great. also i could help you alot more if i knew what motor was in the truck. if you want email me and ill see if i can help you out. im a DC tech also. i searched through my TSB's at work on Dealerconnect and i dont see any that concern your condition. just email me if ya can

Message: Cause could be many. I've once saw a malfunctioning alarm system shut down a car in the high speed lane of the turnpike, it's a possibility if you have an alarm that is designed to be able to disable your vehicle.

Message: I have a 92 5.2 and it started dieing on me while driving. The first time I towed it home and replaced the fuel filter and then it started after that it died on me again. In the past if it died it would start again after about 5 hours. This time it has been 3 days and it still does not start. I replaceed the ignition coil, rotter bug, distributor cap, and the pick-up coil. I also about 2 months ago changed all the spark plugs and wires. Any help out there would be great. I also ran the codes with the check engine light and got 12,54,55 which I was told the only one that is a code for a 92 is 55 which means that the battery has been disconnected in the last 100 starts. Thanks a lot.

Message: How many miles on your truck? It might be the fuel pump. I have seen many posts on replacing them. I have a 1992 as well, and plan on replacing mine in the next month or two, as I have intermittent stalling problems as well. However, mine usually happens when mildly accelerating from a stop, such as a left turn, and I get a split second loss of power. It still has the original equipment on it, so I suppose it is time for a new pump and filter.
If you can afford it, I highly reccomend picking up an OBDI/II scanner. I bought an Actron off ebay a couple years ago, reads both OBDI and II cars, can read sensors in realtime and will take a 2 minute rolling snapshot of sensors you select. I think I paid about 140 for the reader and the cartridges for Chrysler OBDI and generic OBDII.

Message: I have a similar problem that is related to stalling. I have replaced the IAC, cleaned throttle body, cap & rotor, new plugs and wires and these did not solve my problem. It is a 97 5.2L CC. After many weeks of sporadic stalling, sometimes hot out sometimes cold out, most never started right back up. I have traced it down to the computer, I think. I can put pressure on the pigtail closest to the firewall on the PCM when the engine is running and the damn thing will die. I have torn apart the wire harness's and troublshooted the pigtails. I have not found a short but I can kill the engine with a little presure on the one pigtail on the PCM side of the connector. I can get it started when it stalls by wiggling the connector mentioned above. Now I am currently saving my money for a mopar computer since it is cheaper than the dealer (only by ten bucks). My question is for Mike the DC tech... does this mean I have a bad computer (pin connector) on the male end of the computer connection and this is causing my stalling? Reason I suspect this also is because I had made the mistake of putting in a jet chip a few months ago and durring the install I accidentally pushed one pin into the PCM about 1/4 inch. Obviously the truck would not start without the pin making contact so I pulled it back out reseated the chip and it has ran fine for a few months. I also have been noticing a jittery flashing effect on my radio display which may be a tell tale sign I have a bad connection in my electrical system, maybe the harness under the fuse box? I dont know but I have to check that still. Maybe some of this information will help someone, I will post more as the days go on.
A note on the radio flashing effect I have checked all connections there two.

Message: I had a '92 5.2 that had this problem at 160,000 miles. After the usual tune-up and computer readouts, I replaced speed sensor, throttle body kicker, intake temperature sensor, etc. The dealer plug-in scope didn't help. Finally, I replaced the original computer PCM with the Mopar Performance unit. End of problem.

Message: Back to work on the 92 of mine. It only has 92,000 miles on it. I think that I left out a very important detail before. When it dies I am usually driving down the road and I can have the truck at 2000 rpms then with out a sign it drops to none. I was wondering if maybe the ignition control modular could have something to do with this problem. I really don't think that it is the fuel pump because I took out the spark plug out to check for spark and my friend was in the truck and when he turned the key and pressed the gas pedel it sprayed fuel out of the spark plug hole but it may not be getting enough gas I don't know I am not much of a mechanic. Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks for the help so far and about the computer pmc I will take a look. Thanks again guys.

Message: I had this issue with an 98 R/T... dunno if this'll help, but mine would die out just like this, ended up being a bad catalytic converter... they cut it out and sliced it apart, somehow the guts got turned sideways, and when they got to a certain temp they would block off so much of the exhaust that it'd just back it up into the engine, killing it.

Message: Well I fixed my 92 it was the computer all along. The control modular is in the computer and it went bad. I almost forgot how good the 40 series flowmasters sound under my truck it has the 5.2 and wow. I love it went it barks the tires at 45 when it shifts the cops don't though. The only problem with loud exhaust is that it draws the police attention just like everyone else. Thanks for the help guys. I will be checking back in on you all from time to time.
