Subject: What's that smell? IP: Logged
Message: I've noticed a slight funk smell after I have been racing a little. Not on a track just the local stop light drag. But at the next light I smell what I think is the catalytic converter. What would be causing this?

Message: NO It happens after every meal not just lunch. I have an auto. And my LSD does allow tire spin. It doesn't smell like burnt rubber , lunch or clutch. It smell almost like rotton eggs. I wonder if the catalytic converter gets too hot to fast and it's burning up. It only does it when I do short hard runs but if I go 300 miles a 80Mph it doesn't do it.

Message: Unless you have a leak in your exhaust I don't really think you would smell it. I have had clogged cats and they never but out a smell. Who knows????

Message: I have 2001 4.7 QC Auto, Noticed this on mine as well, of course I run the S#it out it sometimes. Mine is the converter, I did some research about this and was told its possible under WOT that some unburned fuel can make its way to the converter and is burned there, as in running rich, and that is what causes the smell. I am not a mechanic, but thats what one told me.
I started running 87 instead of 91 and I dont notice it as much, but I really dont know if that had anything to do with it or not.

Message: I noticed that just tonight. Only after I run it hard.I did a 0-60 gtech run in 6.8sec(fastest time) down a street. I know I have a muffler leak because the clamps that hold on my muffler have soot on them(shi*ty Midas).

Message: I had the same problem in my 98 Durango 5.2. I had taken it to 5 different dealers, had the cat replaced two times and went to arbitration to get out of the lease. After all said and done I had to live with the putrid smell. The answer I got from dodge was "its a characteristic of the durango." I guess it must be the same for the Dakota too. I have noticed occasionaly on my 02 QC the same smell, just not as bad. I think maybe an after market exhaust may do the trick.

Message: I don't know if the Dodge's do this, but my old '96 Chevy Cavalier freqeuently would smell like Rotten Eggs after hard accelleration. I did some research into it, since when I took it in the Cat checked out fine, and found out that Chevy had an interesting answer to cooling the Cat down.
Under WOT the computer made the engine so rich so unburned fuel would make it into the Cat and cool it.

Message: I think Eric's on the right track here. Making sure your air filter is clean also might help. Also check state of engine tune. I find it hard to accept "its a characteristic of the Durango" or " they all do that" when some don't. Mine doesn't smell after hard acceleration. Chris also makes a good point suggesting 87 octane. Higher octane fuel is harder to ignite, that's why it resists detonation and shouldn't be run unless you really need it.
