Message: Maybe you had oil pressure the whole time. It could be the guage or the sending unit that's bad.

Message: kingauth ... when you say no oil pressure, is the oil pressure needle on the red line or at the 1st line above that?

Message: i have 93 5.2 with oil pressure prob's.the needle goes to the very left basically off the gauge.if this reading was true, the motor would let go by the next stop light.i have no knocks(knock on wood).i believe the sendig unit is bad.u should replace ur sendig unit or run a copper line from where the old sending unit is and install a mecanical gauge.i bet ur oil pressure is just fine.also remember that oil pressure is only good if you have the volume.example:u have a air compressor, the pressure is great tilu hook up ur 1/2"impact.all of a sudden the air pressure is gone.same thing in ur motor.u can have great oil pressure til u mash the gas.volume is whts important.hope this helps

Message: kingauth,
There is no mention of what year model DAK you have.......
krbdog,
The 93's have dual sensor/switch setup. The sensor goes to the guage and the switch goes to the "idiot light". When the pressure drops below 8psi the idiot light is supposed to come on. These 2 sensor/switches mount side by side on the back side of the engine. You can test the idiot light out by grounding the wire to chasis.
If your pressure gauge is reading zero and the idiot light isn't coming on then you do have an electrical problem some where.
The only reason I know this is because I had a 93 and it had the same problem. I learned my lesson on taking anything to the dealer for repairs. They will screw you over and destroy your truck in the process.

Message: kingauth,
Well, my 92 had a simular problem ( yes, I've owned nearly every year dakota).
On my 92 the oil pressure relief valve stuck open. My truck was relatively new when it happened. Therefore, I had descent oil pressure at idle. As soon as the engine got to opperating temp. the oil pressure fell below 5psi. As long as the RPM's were over 2500 it had normal oil pressure.
Does your oil pressure jump up when you give it a little gas? If it does, I would replace the oil pump.

Message: This seems to be a problem with quite a few dakotas and durangos spanning many years, that the oil pressure will drop off the electronic gauge at low rpms and the check gauges light will come on then when you get the rpms back over 1000 it will go out and the oil pressure gauge will go back to normal but this seems to only happen at operating temp or higher, not at start up or low temps. I myself have a 97 dakota with a v8 and have replaced the sending unit which changed nothing. Does anybody know what to do?

Message: scott ... I had that kind of problem for well over a year before I came across a solution that worked for me. My problem was that, whether at city or highway speeds, my oil pressure needle would slowly drop and/or fluctuate with rpms, between the 1st line and the top center line. Being that I'm a bracket racer, I was quite concerned.
I finally discovered at the track that the wires coming from the sending unit were immediately being bent downward and put under tension right at the connector. The reason is that the sending unit's wiring comes off a heavy, thick wiring harness which runs across the firewall but well below the level of the sending unit. I raised this wiring harness and zip tied to take the weight off the sending unit's connector. No more fluctuating oil gauge for the past year :-) HTH.

Message: When I replaced the oil pump in my 5.2l '92 it only had about 36K on it. The dealer would not fix it. The problem started when it had 30K on it. I drove that truck for 3 months with this intermittent problem. I kept telling them it was the oil pump and they kept telling me there was nothing wrong with it. At 36K it was out of warranty. Therefore, I purchased a new pump and installed it myself. It never did it again.......
I tore down the old pump and found what I had suspected all along. Debri had gotten into the oil pressure relief valve and had scared the cylinder wall of the relief valve. The piston would stick open when it went across the scars and that was what was causing my oil pressure fluctuations............
I'm not sure how the debri got in the engine in the first place. Up until then, the dealer had done all of my oil changes. Therefore, any debri that got into the engine had to have already been there from the factory or the dealer got it in there when they did the oil changes.
