At the risk of asking a dumb question, what grade of oil does the 4.7 require? My used 2001 dak doesn't have the owner's manual for me to check. I live in Ontario, Canada, so i'm thinking either 5w30 or 10w30, but I'm just not sure. I don't want to guess and put the wrong grade in since the 4.7's have a history of oil related problems.

Jdak,

You may want to make sure that you put in 6 quarts with that filter change.

I used AMSOIL 5w-30, performed good with extended drain intervals. Switched to AMSOIL Series 2000 0w-30, supposed to be even better, BUT IN MY EXPERIENCE not for the 4.7. According to my oil analysis the 4.7 generates tons of internal heat, and the series 2000 0w-30 couldn't hold up (REMEMBER, THIS IS IN REGARDS TO EXTENDED DRAIN INTERVALS) I am going to start using AMSOIL 10w-30 in my next change as apparantly it is a little more stable at higher temps than the 5w-30. Hope this is good info for someone.

2002 QC 4x4 Sport Plus, 4.7L, auto, Patriot Blue, Tire & Handling group,
Heavy Duty Service group, Leer cap w/out windows, Mopar Step bars and roof rack, Rhino liner in bed and on step bars, Pace Edwards Power Tailgate lock
3.55 rear, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, all possible fluids are AMSOIL

There was a thread years ago about this original question. After everyone put in their 2cents, it seemed to mee that the 10-30 (mobil 1) for me, was the way to go.

And, good advice, especially without reading the owners manual, about the 4.7, taking 6 quarts of oil!
