Subject: Problem Can't Solve
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota 5.2L Magnum and when the truck is cold it wants to fall on its face and spudders, I have to let off the throttle to get it to stop. Once the truck gets warm it want do it. I've changed the TPS and it still does the same thing it just doesn't seem as bad. Could I have gotten another bad TPS or what is it. HELP!!!

Here's a few things to check, might not be the TPS... in fact, if it's the TPS, I would think it would do it when hot too...

Check your battery charge. It may be discharging slightly (do to a dead/dying cell) when you let it sit, putting a large draw on the alternator when it's first started as it tries to recharge. This means less power for your truck's ignition system. If you've got another vehical with a similiar sized battery (amperage), drop it in and see if the problem goes away.

Check your distributor rotor and cap for excessive carbon scoring along the contacts, and/or cracking of plastic parts. There may be moisture getting into the cap if it's cracked/loose, which could cause that.

If you have over 70,000 miles, consider changing your fuel injectors. You may be able to get by with running a tank of injector cleaner through though...

Reset the PCM. No, really, you'd be -surprised- the minor little hiccups this will fix. It might not do it, but it's simple enough to do.

Compression check!

Remove and check your spark plug condition and their gap. The electrode tips should be a light grey, which indicates proper running. If they look excessivly worn, replace. The Autolite plugs really helped my idle.

Inspect spark plug wires for cracks or other damage. Replace as nessary.

I'm sure there are other things to check, I'll think of them later probally :0)

Duh, I'm an idiot. It -is- doing it when it's hot... still, if you replaced the TPS, I don't think it's likely you got a faulty one.

my truck was doing the same thing when i parked it for the winter (95 dak.5.2 auto 2wd). i'll be checking the problem in a few weeks when i take it out. i read a section aboout distributor indexing on speadtweaks tech site which made alot of sense since i had my distributor out about a year ago when i put a cam in it. its had the problem since and i know i timed the cam right so this is most likely the problem for me. have you tried to adjust timing with the dist. the timing is not adjustable with the dist. only through programing. if you tried you may have threw the indexing off on the dist.

The most neglected part on most vechiles is the fuel filter. Changing it might correct your problems.

You don't have to remove anything...just the fuel filter. Should be inline about half way down the driver side frame rail. Takes about 5 mins to change. Just remember to either depressurize it first or pinch of the lines on either side unless you want to get doused with gas.

Try cleaning the IAC solenoid..go to the "tips and tricks" section on the Speedtweaks page and it will give you all the detailed steps...it is pretty easy.

I agree smokem, I sure wish we had an inline fuel filter, seems just crazy not to have one on modern autos..

Wasn't it in 94' when they changed to the newer fuel system with the return loop. This maybe when the filter started living in the tank. Makes sense, don't want the sending unit pulling in all kinds of garbage.

i'm not sure if it's better or not to have the filter in the tank . i would think the filter would be neglected way too often. the chevs have the filters in line and yes i have seen alot of fuel pumps go bad in these, but i've also seen alot of ram/dakota pumps go bad. i just think it would make more sense to have the filter and regulator outside of the tank from a maintenence and performance point of view!!!

I've cleaned the IAC and changed the coolant temp., the spark plug wires, and rotor cap and button. I think the next thing I'm going to try is the O2 sensors. I have access to a scan tool and the O2 were showing like 1.70 volts which means they are shot. It is starting to fall on its face when it is hot now so I'm hoping it is the O2's telling the PCM to pour the fuel in making it extremely rich. Thanks again for all the input, any other would be greatly appriciated.

Willie, I had the same problem, don't know if this is the answer, but it possibly is. I had junk in the gas tank and the fuel pump would suck the stuff up into the line and clog the line so that it got less or no gas. Filling the tank gave you more gas so the junk would not be sucked up.

Solution? Hook air line to gas line and blow junk into the gas tank and then remove and clean the gas tank and replace the fuel filter. Worked for me.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Once the engine warms and things expand a bit, the leak seals and it runs better. A warm engine would not run differently if the fuel system were clogged. Perhaps sticky injectors that loosen up when warm. Try a product known as Sea Foam. It really works, not this so-so injector cleaner stuff. Sea Foam is available at better auto parts stores.

I have 96' Dakota with a bad fuel pressure regulator in the fuel pump module. Which means I'm replacing the entire fuel pump modlule. After getting information from auto manuals, theres supposed to be a tool out there needed to replace this thing called a "special tool 6856." I've asked around and nobody can tell me anything. Anybody know anything about it?
