Subject: help - 4.7 idle IP: Logged
Message: I understand that this engine will not idle super smooth, but sometimes it will rev up and down (to about 1200 rpm and back to 550) several times during idle. Any suggestions? Im new on here and this seems to be the best source of info.

Message: Your engine should idle very smooth or else something is wrong with it. My 2002 4.7L idled so smooth you could sit a Bic cigarette lighter on top of the air hat while it was running and it wouldn't fall over.

Message: yeah, if u pop the hood the engine seems to be running smoothly, but not really( if u look at the tach). It idles pretty smooth just every now and then races up and down. Thans for the advice. I guess I can't compare idles to my old honda 4cyl. Talk about silk and steady. It idled with rythm.

Message: What year model is it? It sounds like a tps. Does it surge when the cruise is on? How many miles is on it?

Message: Hey tchandler,
I have had the same problem since I had about 3000 miles on my 2000 dak 4.7 5-speed. It seems to do it more on wet days. I have had the IAC replaced twice and had it cleaned once, and it does not help. The engine now has 55,000 miles and it still does it. I just recently replaced my PCV valve and it helped a little but it was not fixed. I have found out that there are several ohter owners with the same problem. The bad thing is that Dodge refuses to admit there is a problem. I have heard of a few people getting there computer flashed and it helping but that was not my luck. I do not really have an answer to your problem, but just remember that you are not alone.

I hate to sound dumb, but how would you go about fixing the tps on the 4.7?
Thanks

Message: Had the same prob with my 02 QC Auto. Dealer chased prob for about six months, then finally replaced entire throttle body assembly (tps, iat, etc. included). Idles perfect. Wiplash pointed out the surging at constant speeds -- mine did this also when the idle was rough. I think it was unlocking and locking the torque converter. Now, with the new TPS, it idles smooth and doesn't surge while cruising at hi-way speeds. I guess Diamler is using crappy suppliers for the TPS, as well as the Rotors and Balljoints.

Message: tchandler - you can compre your engine to anything you want - it can idle as smoothly as your honda; if it doesn't, you shouldn't accept it as a characteristic of the 4.7 - they can be made to idle well.

Message: Same problem here...started @ 3000-3500milesl on my 4.7... The dealer said they know the problem. Its a timing issue and a low idle set from factory. They cannot fix it because upping the timing will cause a definite detonation problem and raising the idle is a no go because the EPA will not approv this on millions of engines, it would raise the emmission output too much.
I have talked to many poeple on this subject....those who have solved it went with a pcm flash or chip upgrade. All of there idle issues left them.

Message: What the dealer told you about timing is nonsense - I have increased timing on mine, and there is no detonation problem with the aluminum heads. I do need to use premium for towing, but I don't consider that a problem. The idle setting can be adjusted, but would be the best cure only if your truck has always idled low - if it was fine but then became rough, there has to be a reason. Low idle can make it stall, as I found when swapping my 65mm TB for a ported 68mm from a standard tranny truck, cured by raising idle; but that won't make it surge. Dealers just don't like fixing problems they can't easily diagnose because they only get warranty reimbursement for bad parts. Cuts down on the shotgun approach to mechanics, but means you really have to keep after them to get a problem like this fixed.

Message: Yes it does the surging as well. I need to replace the TPS and hopefully it will help. Thanks for all the great info guys. I like the truck otherwise. Dodge is still my first choice for this size of truck.

Message: Woody,
There's no repairing the TPS. You have to replace it. I never had to replace one on anything except Fords. I maybe getting ready to replace one on my R/T soon. It surges every once in a while with the cruise on.
The TPS sensor is located on the drivers side of the throttle body. It is held on by 2 torx head screws. It takes about 5 minutes to replace.

Message: hey WipLash,
I finally got around to replacing my tps and my idle still likes to go up and down when it is warming up. Do you have any other suggestions to cure this? I am on a fixed bugget and a $400 pcm upgrade is currently out of the question. thanks for the help.

Message: Well I changed the TPS, no problem. $28.00 OTD from Autozone for the sensor and $5.00 for the T-25 Torx wrench.
The idle has fluctuated once, and it stalled on me one time, so I am not convienced this has fixed the problem.
My next step is to clean the TB.
I have seen posts about people mentioning the locking of the torque converter can also be causing these symptoms? Does this make any sense ???

Message: Dodgetech2 - yes, I have an aftermarket flash that raised the timing to 29 degrees.
KTinFV - make sure you clean the IAC while the TB is off - you shouldn't need a new flash to make it idle right; mine idled fine with the PCM stock too.
