Subject: what if kept in 4wd Low? IP: Logged
Message: someone took my 02 4x4 out for a trip and said they smelled burning rubber and it got real jerkey. They then noticed it was in 4wd Low. The total drive was probably 5-10 miles, and it seems ok now. What kind of possible damage could have been done to one of these trucks?

Message: WOW. They didn't notice it was in LOW??? It is pretty obvious. Was this on asphault?
Hopefully it's ok. The jerky feeling could have just been the constant shifting and high revs and the massive engine breaking when you let of the gas.
I try not to use 4WD Low too much, but it is kind of cool when I do. It will climb like a crazy monkey!

Message: I hope these weren't friends or relatives of yours because they are IDIOTS!! Who could put a truck in 4wd low and not know it. GEEZ!! What the hell were they smoking! You did kick their ass afterwards? Didn't you?

Message: In a straight line it would be OK but in turns you would get constant drive line bind because the T-case lacks a center differential. That's what the jerkiness is. The front and rear wheels moving at different rates thriugh a turn means they go differnt distances throuh a turn and there is no way to accomodate this in the T case.
Can it cause damage? You betcha, especially when the T case is aluminum. Things can break in a hurry. I'd say you got lucky. 4 low should only be used in a straight line up steep inclines or on slippery surfaces pulling loads, like a boat up a ramp.

Message: But how could you be going 30 mph and not notice you were turning 4k rpm in high gear? The burning rubber you smelled was your tires from them turning it on dry pavement. Chances are you are ok. Just don't give your keys to that person ever again.
