Message: THE ENGINE IS THE 318 WHICH HAS BEEN AROUND FOREVER. BULLETPROOF. THE TRANNY IS GENERALLY GOOD,ALTHOUGH I JUST HAD TO HAVE MINE REBUILT AT 114K TO THE TUNE OF $850.

Message: The 5.2 is an anvil. The only engine that rated better was the nuclear-proof 225 slant six. Trannys? Strip the stock overdrive model down, put good clutches in, and an aftermarket kit to improve the shifting and lube. Then, it'll be great. The eggheads ruined the reputation established by the 3-speed Torqueflites.

Message: The 318 is probably the most relaible V8 ever built IMHO. Next would maybe be the Ford windsor V8's. You could get over 200K miles out of all of those engines without any smoke from the tail pipe.
The 727 tranny is great but the stock 904's can't hold up to much power at all. The 904 and 727 are identical in design, the 727 is just bigger. The throttle linkage is VERY important to have set correctly or the tranny will cook.
I've worked on my share of those engines and tranny's over the years.
