Subject: 518 not shifting properly

I have a 94 dakota with a 518 trans. Sometimes it want go into overdrive like it should. But when it doesn't, most of the time it will eventually shift into overdrive brfore I finish driving around town. On a couple of occassions, it did go into overdive at all.
I have been trying to determine what is causing this problem. I have looked in the archives to research any discussion of a similiar problem. I have seen talk of a trans temp sensor which I don't have on my truck. There is the possibility of the speed sensor being bad, but if I am remembering right the trans was never engaging into overdrive on these particular trucks. Some have had problems with the overdrive switch. I am just trying to get a hold of the possibilities before I go spending money on it.
I changed the trans fluid and filter. I want to say that that helped, but I am not sure.
Can anyone offer any insight into this problem? Thanks.

Truck had 43,500 miles when I bought it. It has 97,000 miles on it now. I have changed the trans fluid in it twice since I have had it. Very little material in the old fluid to speak of both times. I changed it the other day and it was as clean a fluid coming out of a trans as I have ever seen.
I did install a shift kit in it the first time I changed the fluid at around 50,000 miles. But, these problems just started happening since it has had around 90,000 miles.
I was thinking it may be a bad overdrive switch, but I wanted to be more certain before I started buying parts for it.
Any suggestions?

No, it does this regardless of the temperature outside. I think I will up the line pressure some more since I have this shift kit installed.
